Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 20/09/2026(also, this all assumes that humans going extinct wouldn't be a good thing, and that we should make our ethical judgments based on potential future harms, rather than everything those judgments do in the present, which no one seems to want to talk about) 010
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 20/09/2026The problem is: any interesting thing humans do might increase the risk of extinction. Eventually you get so deep into useless arguments about likelihood and uncertainty all built on top of vibes, it becomes totally useless as a decision tool. 130
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 20/09/2026I'm surprised that real people are taking the superintelligence => extinction risk line of thinking seriously. In high school debate, we loved connecting things to extinction because it was infinitely bad. Even a small chance of extinction would outweigh any ordinary harms. 131

Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 18/07/2026There are a lot of ways to critique AI (e.g. as a political-economic project or as a collection of flawed technologies) but imo (as someone who doesn't use chatbots on principle) I don't think "chatGPT is useless and bad" is credible anymore, unless you feel similarly about google search. 010
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 18/07/2026* There is no guarantee that either is giving you truth -- web content is still only as reliable as its author. * The LLM-generated summaries (even if they are supposedly quotes) are still synthetic text with no guarantee of accuracy to the underlying web pages. 100
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 18/07/2026* Today, ChatGPT retrieves web pages in response to your query and loads their text before generating a response. You can see the web results on the ChatGPT page, separate from the LLM text. * The process that it uses to retrieve pages, while not identical, is not meaningfully different from Google. 100
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 18/07/2026All the "is ChatGPT a search engine?" discourse is revealing a lot of misconceptions around the relationship between LLMs, RAG and search. Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 09/07/2026In the past, new technologies have changed our ways of thinking of ourselves. I expect that will happen with genAI as well, and many writers/humanists will start to take strongly anti-computational/probabilistic positions on the mind and thought. I'd expect embodiment will be one of those positions. 030
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 09/07/2026The argument that persuaded me as a graduate student against computationalism was embodied cognition. Most of the parts of your body are responding continuously to environmental stimuli that don't go through your senses. While we can simulate those systems, they are poorly modeled by computers. 2110

Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 07/06/2026All this is to say, knowledge workers of all stripes who are worried about their employers using AI to prioritize short-term cost savings over long term institutional stability should probably join a union. 110
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 07/06/2026This gives rise to a pretty classic "management/labor" split in priorities: is your goal as a software engineer to build institutional knowledge around a problem area? Or is it to get the code working? The pre-DL mindset is the former, the DL mindset is the latter. 110
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 07/06/2026This, of course, is all a natural consequence of the ideology of the performance benchmark, where "outperform" means score higher on a test set designed around whatever a stakeholder wants the computer to do. 100
Sam Goree @samgoree.bsky.social · 07/06/2026Deep learning is based on the idea that well-designed systems built with domain knowledge could be outperformed by domain-agnostic systems with more data and compute. Vibe coding is the same idea, that rather than taking the time to understand a problem, it's easier to just throw tokens at it. 100
