I'd like to believe that there's more intention at play.
Because maybe there would be enough resources to go around in Carol's world, if there were suddenly no incentive to hoard wealth away for generations. Could that sudden lack of artificial scarcity create space for something more hopeful than the post-apocalyptic hellscapes we're so familiar with?

Some reviews for #TheNightward say they couldn't find the Caribbean in my book. 1st, it's a secondary world fantasy. I promised you Caribbean mythology, not Caribbean, the place. 2nd, this Caribbean you're not seeing. What is it? A coconut tree? A beach? A hammock? Educate me, why don't you 🙄?

💯I only attempted to read them this year and DNFd the 3rd one. I may go back later. There’s a lot to love and I appreciate the work the authors did do, but there are some serious tells that it’s written by cishet white guys, especially the repeated exoticization of Naomi and her ethnic ambiguity.

I really enjoyed these quiet stories illuminating life in Kashmir. Rafiqs style is at once tangible and surreal, making me feel both the absurdity of life under constant threat and surveillance and the normalcy of it all.

I am simultaneously astounded that the “yes she was” is not immediately clarifying yet kind of happy that they don’t get it. And I think sometimes about how important increasingly coded language will be in a world of LLMs clawing at mimicry of human subtly.
