There are hundreds of 'key caps' on Etsy, maybe someone could knock up a Brian Blessed!
Photo of a dark brown 'monster' in the form of a key cap - the plastic moulded key cap sits on top of a key on a computer keyboard.

I'm unclear what it means. 1) we can't walk and chew gum at the same time, or 2) keep this motion quiet so nobody notices.

The Artificial Human is pretty good though. Not entirely techy but often illuminating. They're scrapping that.

So these illustrations come from an Australian catalogue, but the chairs are supplied by Maples - I remember that furniture emporium from my childhood, it was in Tottenham Court Road in London. It had never occurred to me that they exported stuff!

It's a big failure of leadership (which presumably is a team effort rather than a one man band). Surely they could have managed to muster more than 1% of members to vote this down, (even if their party rules wouldn't allow them to veto it from the outset).

"At the conference less than 1% of the membership voted" This seems to me to be a rather important observation, which I haven't seen mentioned in UK commentary on the lamentable motion.

Somewhat apropos, I was talking with someone about the Manchester City scandal, and musing about the current Arab owners simply declaring bankruptcy and buggering off. He was persuaded that Arabic notions of 'honour' would mitigate against this route. Same with MBS I think.

Depends on which 'Zionists' you listen to. If it's the "river to the sea" brigade then it's racial genocide. If it's "the Jews have a right to a piece of the planet" then it's political. (Whether that is racist is arguable.) It's a nonsensically phrased motion.

I'm not pleased by Burnham's (reported) position on Man City. I was impressed by his speech, happy about his proposals (if a bit vague), but then today he comes out with a defence of the Man City owners because they (I paraphrase) threw a lot of money at Manchester.

True about the winds - the highest ground to the East is Siberia! Can't see that as a political factor though.

"East" used to be true blue, never saw a tinted face. Poles (etc) came in to do agric work, were seen as unacceptably foreign. Voted Brexit to get rid of them. Then got tinted immigrants in dead boarding houses and hotels in Skegness, Caistor etc. Seen as unacceptably foreign. Rinse and repeat.

That's a credible notion, but do those areas want motorways? I lived in South Humberside before the Humber Bridge was opened, and 'local feeling' was that it was a Bad Thing, and would attract Hull Robbers, and lock up your daughters etc etc!

I have sometimes disparagingly said of a designer outfit "that woman is wearing curtain material", but never before have I seen "the sofa look". Did she not read the "couch posts"?

Very few of those 'events' were weaponised, (Thatcher's minister Norman Fowler was impressive on AIDS) and (although I'm not suggesting they didn't exist) Bosnia and misogyny hardly made a pinprick on the UK consciousness. Famine and Rwanda had their 5 minutes of fame, that's all.

I can't pretend to understand your post, (I'm not techy enough), but maybe you're suggesting some sort of selective geoblocking, which shouldn't be difficult, and is a good idea.

I think one problem is that 'maths' text books are misleadingy siloed into statistics, graphics, trigonometry, calculus etc, and don't look at the interactions (or choice of which option is most helpful to solve a question). (I'm not at your university level teaching though).
010
Sallyoo @sallyoo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I'm a big fan of making all maths "applied", which text books never do. So starting chatting about an application (dice or poker eg.) and then saying actually you've already modelled (aka understand) it, you just never called it maths!

If you have students who are difficult to engage, start off with poker odds, (or in my day horse betting worked, where three way accumulator probabilities were most useful). Some of them will do it 'in their heads'.

I do appreciate that moka coffee is liked by many people, and if a friend offers me a moka I'll always accept gratefully, but I hope you will agree that moka and high pressure espresso are quite different taste experiences.

Third tip, don't entertain a moka! I have one, (as a fail-safe when the power goes, making the Pavoni inoperable) but the espresso from a moka is a quite different beverage - drinkable, but without the high pressure steam it's not a bar experience.

I'm bewildered why a vacuum cleaner needs a headlight, let alone a camera, but headlights have been in vogue since the 1970s, and I think we are meant to assume that AI now spots the dirt - as in the toothbrush scenario. Basics like regular tooth brushing and regular vacuuming suffice - outdated!

That would be ideal, but I can't see how it could be implemented without means testing. For a reason unfathonable to me, means testing seems to be regarded as impossible.

Yes. It was the point which you made about low income in the different age cohorts not being equivalent, which struck home with me. Okay, so the younger people can potentially find low income employment, (not an option open to the retired), but get shafted with exorbitant housing costs.

At my house in Italy, using the tech of a vpn, airplay, an iphone, a mac tablet and a couple of smart tellys - basically The Lot - my brother was watching the football while my sister-in-law was keeping up with #SewingBee. Phew! (Apparently ITVX isn't geoblocked, but we didn't know that.)
