How did PCI come about? Traditional scientific publishing faces many challenges, including publication costs. “Free to read and publish” is a design principle for Peer Community In: access to scientific evaluation should not depend on the ability to pay.

🚨Elsevier forces out Games and Economic Behavior (GEB) Editor, entire editorial board has resigned, current board only handling new submissions until Nov. 14 #econsky
    Dear Advisory Editor of GEB
We are very sorry to be the bearers of bad news for GEB.
I learned from Elsevier on Wednesday July 28 that, contrary to my expressed willingness to continue, my 3-year contract will not be renewed.
"Moving towards a closer alignment with Elsevier strategic priorities and publishing policies" was offered as the motive for this decision. Requests for explanations, first by me, then in a collective letter by the other six Editors, were dismissed by Elsevier which simply reaffirmed its legal power to make such decisions.
Elsevier then started precipitously its own search for new Editors without input of the Editorial Board.
By Friday August 14 all seven Editors have sent their resignation, requiring a 3-month advance notice.
Therefore, we will continue to manage as before the papers currently under review and the new submissions until Saturday November 14. After this date we will only complete the evaluation of papers still waiting an editorial decision.

‘Carspreading’ could lead to extra 2,600 crash deaths a year by 2040, study finds
Research shows steady growth in car sizes, which puts other road users at greater risk and increases emissions Cars have grown 1.2cm longer, 0.5cm taller and 0.5cm wider each year on average since 2000, analysis of new vehicles sold in Europe has found, in what green groups call “relentless carspreading”. The increase in size, which leaves people more likely to be killed in a crash and increases emissions that hurt lungs and heat the planet, has progressed at a roughly steady rate for two and half decades even as family sizes have fallen, the campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) found. Can the editor of Science Signaling explain why it took 11 months to retract a paper by the Lesné group after being requested to do so by the authors' institutional research integrity officer, who confirmed published figure did not represent research record. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Section from retraction notice dated 23 December 2025.

"On 24 January 2025, we were notified by the research integrity officer of the University of Minnesota that an investigation into concerns about image manipulation in Fig. 1G had been completed. The investigation found that the concerns raised were valid and that the figure as published did not accurately reflect the research record. To correct the literature, the University of Minnesota recommended that the publication be retracted. In light of this recommendation and given our loss of confidence in the paper, Science Signaling is retracting the paper in full."
