Had a nightmare where shadows of my colleagues sat me down for a friendly chat and then kept making innuendos about me being unproductive at work and a waste of money :') Thinking how productivity can be a proxy for trying to earn the love of an unsafe father or brother, and then of other men.

I only have projects that I obsessively rewrite from scratch over and over again for months (years), and every time I discover more natural* designs and (shocker) notice more nuances in the problems. Building intimate relationships with my programs but never building programs…

WHAT ARE THE COORDINATES OF A PIXEL?
Paul S. Heckbert

Did you ever get confused deciding whether pixels were centered at integer coordinates or centered halfway between the integers? We present here a consistent answer to this question.

Loved meeting @alice-i-cecile.bsky.social at RustWeek and interviewing her about Project Goals (which both Rust and Bevy use). <3 This was my first time interviewing someone, and it feels like a full-circle moment since Alice's work is what drew me to program management in the first place!

rust-analyzer skips some semantic tokens and takes long sometimes, so it's kind of a forgetful father in that sense. Or maybe the editor doesn't recognize the tokens, which would give us... rust-analyzer x zed old man yaoi

There's a symbolic mother in me that's terrified of the child she birthed becoming incomprehensible, its own opaque thing outside of her realm. Then there's a father that imposes a rigid structure on the child for the mother's sake, yet it's no big deal for him to leave them undifferentiated... hmm

Nurzhan Saken @saken.me · 31/07/2026
I switched to purely semantic highlighting in my code editor (I use nightly a lot), and suddenly I understand the nightmare I had 4 years ago, in which a mother asked the father of her kids if he remembered to turn on their syntax highlighting before bed; she worried that the kids were monochrome.

[voice-over] Laila, you've disappeared, like everything else. Who else can I talk to? I'm lost. When you left...and Tomáš left...you took everything with you. But the absence of my lower tooth is everywhere I look. It's like a huge hole has been punched through my mouth. But in a way I'm glad...the pain is my only reminder that the tooth was real...that you all were...

Really happy with the geometry/grid API I've found so far.
A Rust function that fallibly computes an intersection of two 2D arrays (of arbitrary sizes and cell types) in 2D space, then iterates the intersection to find the first pair of respective cells that satisfies a predicate, and returns a pair of mutable references to the matching cells, if any.

My personal projects usually don't have any dependencies (or I look for very minimal ones and keep them at the periphery). I also obsess over not using std/alloc if possible and keeping things const. I think it's beautiful and everyone should do that, though I never get anything done :)))

Oh! There was a directly related talk at RustWeek. At 33:44, someone brings up GhostCell; earlier, at 28:05, @aapoalas.trynova.dev talks about a similar approach in gc-arena, and the speaker also mentions Haskell's ST monad, which expresses the same idea. See also: the generativity crate.

Thanks to the GhostCell paper for teaching me branded types in Rust via invariant lifetimes. This has been *awesome* for eliminating pretty much all bounds and length checks in my indexing-heavy code (and enforcing more subtle invariants).

So... there can be lots of nesting and indirection involved to reach something alive on the archipelago known as the Rust Project. (But doesn't the needle contain death?) And RustWeek pushed me to confront my fears around belonging and let myself *drown* into a deeper engagement with Rust.

Nurzhan Saken @saken.me · 28/05/2026
The nesting motif in the second dream makes me think of Кащей Бессмертный from Russian folklore, who hid his death in a needle, the needle in an egg, the egg in a duck, the duck in a hare, the hare in a chest, the chest on an island. (The island in an archipelago, all in a drowned's dream...)
