Using BlueSky has helped me find so much incredible research, but also caused my to-read list, a bunch of open tabs, to balloon in size. So I built a widget to track papers and share them with friends. Introducing Marginalia, a social reading shelf for academics! marginalia-papers.netlify.app

My brilliant friends Saismit and Satavisha wrote an article for Times High Education about being a more effective and active ally to women and underrepresented minorities in academia! Synthesizing evidence across different aspects, they then trace out actionable steps as to what to do to address it.

As I & @satavisha-de.bsky.social , move up the career ladder, the tampons in the bathroom may increase, but the women around us do not. Despite policies meant to patch its cracks, academia continued to sieve out women. We saw it, we heard it from our peers. So we looked for the literature.

We further show in our Supplementary how mutation effects in considered traits and temperature interact in simple thermodynamic models and can have a diversity of outcomes. Questions? Contact us.

Empirical support is mixed: microbes can show large high-temperature mutation benefits but also cold trade-offs with phylogeny playing an important role. Our work underscores the need to bridge details of biophysical adaptations → population growth → range expansion dynamics.

Saismit Naik @saismit.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Faster warm-edge expansion arises from larger mutation effects at higher temperatures. But that same property reduces predictability, as increased front variability counteracts selection's variance-reducing effect.

Saismit Naik @saismit.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Thermodynamic models show a hotter-is-better trend reaching higher maximum growth rates at hotter temperatures, whereas the rate-depressing effects of cold keep expansion constrained along a decreasing thermal gradient. The Gaussian curve, on the other hand, expands easily along the colder gradient.

Enzyme Catalysis (the Macromolecular Rate Theory) + Protein Denaturation Model (Chen et al. 2010) + a Gaussian thermal performance curve are compared. Populations are initialised with near-identical thermal niches and expand along a decreasing and increasing temperature gradient.
