Climate change isn’t taking us to one new, stable place. It’s pushing us into a future of constant change and growing uncertainty. So the question isn’t: What will the new normal be? It’s: How do we prepare for a climate that won’t stand still? Worth reading: theconversation.com/hoping-for-a...

Hoping for a ‘new normal’ climate is pointless. We must learn to adapt
It’s increasingly common to hear climate-fuelled disasters described as the ‘new normal’. But our desire for normality and predictability is wishful thinking

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.com? And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

White supremacist cops take a minority citizen, drive him out to the woods as a threat, and leave him there. No, it's not Mississippi in the 1930s, why do you ask?

There is no shame in struggling w/ emotional regulation. Truly. It's one of the most complicated life skillsets we humans require, & most of the people we meet every day haven't actually mastered it-- they've just developed various levels of denial & unhealthy "coping."

If someone else learned it, we can learn a version of it. Maybe not the exact version they mastered, but our version, that fits our needs & accommodates our injuries. Emotional regulation is realistically figure-outable, even if it doesn't come natural to us. (It doesn't to me.)

In trauma recovery I find it's useful to have rehearsed what we're gonna say to ourselves when it gets hard, when Trauma Brain kicks in & makes a "convincing" case that continuing to live isn't worth it. We don't want to be trying to improv that inner support if we can help it.

Telling yourself it's "okay" to struggle or fail doesn't mean you're "giving up." It means you're realistically managing the result you just got without setting fire to the project. Our trauma conditioning wants us to get dramatic & give up-- but we don't have to.

Being kind to yourself doesn't mean you have to be sugary & syrupy & cringey w/ your self talk. Don't think self-compassion means you have to talk to yourself like a children's show if that's not you. Your self talk can be darker & grittier without being self-assaultive.

I need someone to explain to me how holding a man accountable for sexual aggression and/or violence will ruin his life. Trump was held liable for rape in court. He’s still president. Brett Kavanaugh was held accountable for sexual assault by Christine Blasey-Ford. He’s still on SCOTUS.

I'd say even when we had more overt pretenses of secularism, nearly all of our institutions were informally Christian and culturally, we treat atheism, non-Abrahamic, and nontheist traditions with either skepticism or outright discrimination. From crosses on/in public buildings on down.
