"Canada's oil and gas sector accounted for a lower level of emissions in 2025, despite boosts in production, while the country's overall emissions ticked up thanks to increased reliance on natural gas to heat homes." Another data-point for the critical importance of domestic electrification.

Provisional queries & concerns: - Clarification needed regarding the new Vulnerable Road User offences - Disabled cyclists need not dismount at crosswalks, but drivers only required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks - Dooring offences don't mention cyclists, only "traffic" - No photo radar

Right. But yielding to cyclists as they merge from bike lanes shouldn't be a fantasy. It's basic safety priority

there is the civil duty of care, which is more broad. I mean I would hate to see drivers here with no firm traffic laws
010
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 23h
I hate hate hate this law requiring cyclists to yield to vehicles when they exit a bike lane. And all these other requirements, like keeping to the right of a bike lane where all the debris is and the gutter
(3) A cyclist travelling in a bicycle lane must do all of the following:
(a) keep right, if practicable, unless overtaking other traffic travelling in the
same direction;
(b) for a divided bicycle lane, drive in the lane marked for traffic travelling in
the same direction;
(c) go by any oncoming traffic on the right;
(d) overtake any traffic travelling in the same direction on the left;
(e) use a bell or horn to alert other traffic, if intending to overtake or go by.
(4) Before exiting a bicycle lane, a cyclist must yield to any other traffic lawfully travelling in the area of the highway that they are entering.

so now they can overtake, as long as they then yield to any pedestrians. Before they could not at all
010
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 23h
I think its too wide in scope and could be used in a few different scenarios where drivers could and should be approaching crosswalks more carefully and slowly
000
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 23h
this is the current wording in the MVA, pretty much the same. I just don't like it because it could be used where pedestrians, particularly children, are judged to have "darted" out in front of drivers who are probably going too fast for conditions

section 185(2) seems to nullify the duty to drive with care in subsection (1) if the vulnerable road user is harmed or killed ?
101
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 23h
I think its section 23 with powers to traffic authority, not the muni. I don't see the 50 km required minimum without authority from the province, but it could appear in the road user regs nslegislature.ca/legc/bills/6...
nslegislature.ca
Bill 130 - Traffic Safety Act

under the old law the driver cannot overtake other vehicles at all as they approach a crosswalk, I forget the distance. Under the new law they now can, so long as they yield to pedestrians I'll check this when I have time
110
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
it says "if" and it looks like the other driver may still overtake, not just pull alongside, so long as they yield to the pedestrian. Seems pointless and potentially dangerous
000
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
section 185 of the Traffic Safety Act is critical to the new vulnerable road user offences, but the wording is nonsensical as drafted. I have no idea what this even means nslegislature.ca/legc/bills/6...
185 (1) A person driving any of the following on a highway or at any place ordinarily accessible to the public shall drive in a careful and prudent manner considering all the circumstances:

(a) a vehicle;

(b) a conveyance other than a vehicle.

(2) A person driving any of the following shall not contravene subsection (1) and a vulnerable road user suffers death or bodily harm as a result:

(a) a vehicle;

(b) a conveyance other than a vehicle.

Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I don't really get it. They can overtake, but must yield? I don't see how this adds anything and may encourage unsafe behaviour
200
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
"traffic" usually means vehicles, not people, so this dooring offence seems poorly worded - endangering traffic isn't a thing
121
Safe Kjipuktuk @safehrm.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
New dooring offence established, though cyclists are not specifically mentioned and "traffic" isn't defined
109 Opening vehicle door
(1) An individual must not open a vehicle door on either side of the vehicle on a
highway unless all of the following requirements are met:
(a) the vehicle is stopped;
(b) the individual takes due precautions to ensure that opening the door will not
interfere with the movement of, or endanger, any other traffic;
(c) for a door on either side of the vehicle adjacent to moving traffic, it is left
open no longer than necessary to load or unload passengers or materials.
(2) The requirements in this Section are safety requirements and when they apply to
passengers, are passenger safety requirements.

Cyclists must still dismount at crosswalks, except for riders with a disability. However there is nothing about drivers needing to yield to disabled cyclists riding through a crosswalk that I can see. Nor anything about cross-rides
120 Bicycle crossing highway
(1) Subject to subsection (3), to cross a highway using a crosswalk, a cyclist must
dismount and walk the bicycle in the crosswalk.
(2) The provisions of these regulations that apply to a pedestrian at or in a crosswalk
apply to a cyclist crossing a roadway in a crosswalk under subsection (1).
(3) Subjection (1) does not apply to a cyclist that has a physical disability that
precludes them from complying with that subsection.

the Road User Regs are crucial and some of the proposed wording is very concerning, see section 21(4) novascotia.ca/just/regulat...
21 Crosswalks
(1) A driver of a vehicle must yield to a pedestrian who is either
(a) lawfully in a crosswalk; or
(b) stopped at the edge of the roadway facing a crosswalk and lawfully
permitted to cross.
(2) A driver who is travelling on a divided highway on a different roadway than a
pedestrian is not required to comply with subsection (1) until the pedestrian is at or
on the same roadway that the driver is on.
(3) If a vehicle or other conveyance has stopped at a crosswalk, a driver of a vehicle approaching from the rear must not overtake the stopped vehicle or other conveyance, unless the driver yields to any pedestrian in the crosswalk, as required
by subsection (1).
(4) Whether or not there is a crosswalk, a pedestrian must not leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of an approaching vehicle or other conveyance if the vehicle or other conveyance is so close that it is impracticable for it to be stopped

the days of receiving fine as low as $180 for hitting vulnerable road users (failure to yield to pedestrian at a signalized intersection) will hopefully be over That very much depends on enforcement practices.
