Walt Kelly’s “Pogo” made its newspaper debut on October 4, 1948. (I emphasize “newspaper debut” since Pogo had been appearing in comic books since 1941.) It ran in the New York Star at first and began syndication the next year via the Post-Hall Syndicate. Here’s the first strip:
