She has me blocked, so yeah 🙃 I'm too anti-AI and despite my best efforts to advocate (respectfully), she kinda views a lot of creatives & anyone pushing back on AI as NIMBYs or NIMBY adjacent. A lot of tech folk just look down on non-techies, and no difference here.

My continued use of rust will take a "minimal dependencies" approach from now on, because I view crates io as a liability now with the amount of slopcrates on there. I do want to jump to another lang, but I have been enjoying embedded dev a lot, so it's going to suck for a while for me...

Like one I came across is literally claude reproducing the code of an older, much more stable/tested crate. It even had the same code paths, just maybe with renamed variables. Honestly, I probs will start writing rust code with minimal deps from now on. C devs were unfortunately right here 😔

I was a tech lead once, and I was doing everything he was, user journeys, specs, solutiom designs, coordinating work. Even code reviews! Except I worked with actual people, engineers, not LLM agents. So it was all familiar to me, and it made me a bit sad at how everything becomes management...

Mostly though, going pure JS with no build nonsense outside of the stuff to upload to the MCU is quite nice. JS as a simple scripting lang is what it shines as, and going beyond that is painful. A joy to write JS again. Oh how I missed thee.

As a further update: Writing es5 jabbascribt is giving me quite nostalgic vibes. Reminding of a simpler (though not necessarily better) time. No async/await, just naked promise chains and callback code. Much less fluff and more global code. Tiny scripts tho.

Given how many programmers are pro or neutral on AI, I'd basically block like half of rust devs at the moment if I had to go this route. I just block if they interact and do so in bad faith. You can also restrict interactions too.

I probably need to benchmark iocaine locally to make sure, but I figure on my local machine, it'll likely hit similar numbers. Markov chains are pretty fast, and this is entirely CPU driven. LLMs need entire GPUs just to output tens/hundreds of tokens per second.

Did some benchmarking of nailpit's markov chain impl, and I'm quite surprised. 20-22 million tokens per second after being trained on the full Moby Dick text. I think iocaine does around 10 million tokens per second currently? There's potential improvements still, but that will be a whole effort...

Benchmark result for an output of 28KB, 1.2599ms time spent generating, or 22.746 million tokens/elements per second.

Labor force participation hasn't recovered from pre-COVID times and has worsened in the US recently. It's easy to game your unemployment rate if people are dropping out of the workforce entirely. US participation rates are approaching Spain levels, and things here aren't... amazing either.

Just to point out that you also need to look at Labor force participation rate, which for the US has been decreasing and is now below OECD average. This correlates with Employ rate decreasing, while Unemploy rate only decreasing more recently with the decrease in Youth unemploy at 9.1%.

I doubt async-executor/async-io would be better here, but I basically would have to write a custom executor tailored to the workloads of nailpit to get maybe better than tokio perf... But that's a big undertaking... so easier to just stick to tokio for now.

So I tested nailpit with some alternate io-uring async runtimes to see if I could switch from tokio: monoio - Wins on the generated page throughput, but worse tail latencies and more overhead compio - lol, lmao (worse than tokio on every metric) Guess I'm stuck with tokio for now...

I have been writing my own tarpit to do some shenanigans on a lot of these crawlers. Some managed to trip my spicy rate limiting (zip bombs), but otherwise, I just reverse slow-loris the responses to lessen the pressure on my server. I would still need extra stuff like anubis if I host more...
