We’ve relied on U.S. paid plasma for over three decades Our first real boost in self-sufficiency was thanks to commercial plasma We will not be the first country in the world to be self-sufficient without paying donors We’ll just be hypocrites again

We have recommendations to help with this that do not include strategies that have failed like scapegoating immigrants and creating yet another bureaucracy to act as a developer. Take a look at our methodology, results, and recommendations at the link below! thehub.ca/2026/01/14/o...

Only the richest Canadians are able to afford homes—it’s time to free the market: DeepDive
It takes decades of saving to afford a home in Canada's largest cities

For example, we found that it would take an individual in Vancouver 538 months, or almost 45 years, to save up for a down payment on a home.

I'm super proud of this very thorough Deep Dive that we worked very hard on for @thehubcanada.bsky.social on housing. The CCC worked tirelessly to crunch the numbers in a way that Canadians can better understand the hurdles they truly face, and what we found was truly depressing.

Christine Van Geyn of the Canadian Constitution Foundation and I are in The Hamilton Spectator talking about how important it is for provinces to immediately get serious about breaking down provincial trade barriers the more they realize that the USA is not a reliable trade partner.

It is laughable that QC's latest bill is meant to show women are equal when they dont let women have the same rights by banning religious symbols, namely the headscarf, from those who work in government service. If men can wear whatever they choose, women should be able to as well. That's equality.

Diplomacy now on the supposed issues that Canada has and making a deal with Trump is how Canada avoids an economic depression. We can't be Team Canada when our people suffer due to policymakers' actions.
110
Sabine Benoit @sabineec.bsky.social · 22/01/2025
That means coming together to oppose the use of tariffs at all, either by the USA or Canada, because retaliatory tariffs boomerang right back around and hurt Canadians' pocketbooks. Caring about this country means caring about what happens to its citizens, especially the most vulnerable.

Sabine Benoit @sabineec.bsky.social · 22/01/2025
I'm hearing a lot of voices in Canada saying that it is patriotic to show Trump that we will go dollar to dollar and hit the USA with tariffs. The Team Canada approach should rather be one that would not make Canadians suffer more than they already are with affordability.

Overall, it would be more accurate to say that the reverse is true. The United States remains prosperous despite, not because of, tariffs.

Sabine Benoit @sabineec.bsky.social · 20/01/2025
More recently, tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber imposed on and off by the United States have led to higher housing costs in the United States, which continue to contribute to rising housing prices. However, politicians would rather blame the housing crisis on many scapegoats like immigrants.

In 2018, Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports, skyrocketing manufacturing costs for U.S. industries and reducing their market competitiveness sharply.

This tariff resulted in a trade war that led to world trade falling by 66% and U.S. exports and imports crashing by about two-thirds, worsening and prolonging the Great Depression and hurting global trade. But, the USA didn't learn from this terrible failure.

n 1930, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act imposed tariffs on tens of thousands of imported goods, ostensibly to protect farmers and other industries during the Great Depression. (you can find reference to it by Ben Stein in the excellent movie Ferris Bueller's Day off, side note)

Tariffs are simply another policy used by politicians to shore up support and nationalist feelings while not addressing the pain it causes consumers. That's why this tariffs "pause" needs to become permanent. There are other ways to resolve differences, namely through diplomacy.

Sabine Benoit @sabineec.bsky.social · 20/01/2025
It would be impossible to fund today's USA primarily via tariffs from Canada and/or the world. Any notion of funding the federal government out of tariffs consequently remains wishful thinking, especially without committing to cutting spending.

Canadian economist @trevortombe.bsky.social predicts that if the U.S. follows through on tariffs and Canada retaliates, the cost per Canadian household would approach $1,900 CAD per person annually. In the U.S. that impact would be near $1,700 CAD pp. This is a conservative estimate.
