WHO puts out the fire?
The new WHO blood report lets us grade the world’s blood systems according to whether patients get the blood they need. If we apply that test to plasma for fractionation, the rankings turn upside-down

Bertrand raises slippery slopes, but the history of marrow and corneas makes the argument less tidy. U.S. law has already allowed some compensated marrow donation and once tolerated aggressive cornea procurement before public controversy helped push the law back. Slopes can reverse. buff.ly/PYsKehB

Peter Jaworski @peterjaworski.bsky.social · 16/03/2026
And it has done neither of those things. Not a single patient was “put at risk,” and our national blood supply is better than ever. Commercial plasma collection also does not put donors at risk either: peterjaworski.substack.com/p/plasma-don...

Using examples from journalism and donor interviews, the post highlights the mismatch between elite moral narratives about plasma donation and donors’ own descriptions of the activity—as time-bound, compensated, and comparable to other forms of paid work.

From yesterday’s Blood Feud class w/ @peterjaworski.bsky.social. Two very different views of the plasma trade, both true. Donors are in general lower income & drug companies earn profits. The medicines help patients & $$ helps donors. An added plus: it substitutes for high interest payday loans

The Krever Commission also “warned” against relying on imports. As I say in the article, you can’t have it both ways: You can either pay donors or rely on imports from countries that pay donors. No country has figured out a third option
