1/ Restoring Yandex's damaged data centres will take at least six months and cost billions. Disruption is already severe; Russian manufacturers and distributors face imminent disaster due to Ukraine's strikes causing the collapse of the state-operated goods tracking system. ⬇️

11. How mismatched is European seasonal solar supply and electricity demand? Well, here is the situation for my fully electrified house in Switzerland with 13.2kW of solar, a heatpump and an EV. I would have needed about 122kW of PV to be self-sufficient across December.
A screenshot of an app from inverter maker SolarEdge, which monitors the author's monthly household solar electricity production and energy consumption, for the year beginning 1 September 2024. Total production was 10.79kW, consumption 13.62kW. However, in December total consumption was 1.74MWh, while production was only 0.2MWh; in June, total production was 1.72MWh, consumption 0.8MWh.

10. We oughtta be building more wind, especially in seasonal climates like Europe. Solar will get built anyway, it’s cheap, but wind blows at night and in the winter. We’re going to need something to charge the batteries in winter, especially with rising heatpump use.

7. Batteries are going to grow like crazy for the next five years or so and BNEF’s forecasting team are being cowards about it. Batteries are still expensive compared with no batteries, but they are easy and quick to build, and can sometimes replace hard-to-organise investments like transmission.
