A6 1/2: Encountering Moore’s idea made me think different about #literacies and censorship. I was thinking of uncensoring as the antidote to censoring, but Moore suggests this misrecognizes the stakes. She pushed me to consider the underlying problem rather than the symptoms and to focus on place

Agreed! How have you been thinking about nonlinear understandings of time in relation to #literacies? I'd love to hear more about your thinking and the concept of Sankofa

I love this example! It's totally different than how I was thinking about the question, and I love how the place becomes a literal actor personified here. #literacies

A5: McKittrick helped me to think of places not as static containers but as malleable. If oppression is a spatial act (making a place into one thing), then resistance also as a spatial act (making a place into something different), which is central to what I aspire in my #literacies research

This is such a rich example! And I didn't know that you grew up near the Ohio River.

A4: Lakoff and Johnson are often in my mind when I encounter metaphors, like using spatial metaphors to understand time (e.g., a “block” of time, the past is “behind," a time"line"). I’m wondering about how nonspatial understandings of time might help foster alternative futures #literacies

That's really kind of you to say! Thank you!

I agree. I remember required "professional learning community" meetings when I taught high school. They never felt like a Pink TIGers meeting! And you're totally spot on about being organic. That's a good descriptor I should've added. Having choice feels important, and it shifts the entire dynamic

Looking forward to hearing more about what you learn! Do you have any initial thoughts on how you're seeing critical #literacies shifting across spaces and places?

A3 2/2: So I think about spaces where support isn’t an afterthought but intrinsic. Recently @jillhdub.bsky.social and I have been working with a friend Jay on a Substack called Banned Resistance (thebannedresistance.substack.com). It grew out of the online group, to expand its impact #literacies

A3 1/2: During COVID lockdowns I began facilitating an online group with rural teachers across the US, and we’re 6 years in! Sometimes I’m fatigued and think I don’t have energy to meet that month, but when I show up, I always feel more energized after. So support is built into the group #literacies

A2: One thing I learned from the Pink TIGers is the vibrancy of long-term activist communities. For me, these communities help make activist work sustained and sustainable. In my eyes, sustainability is important because fostering liberatory spaces in #literacies education requires a lot of time.

Yes! Pink was for the pink triangle and the TIG both for teacher inquiry group and our aspired furiosity in activism! This was a group that was initially organized by Mollie Blackburn, J.F. Buckley, Caroline, Clarke, and Jeane Copenhaver-Johnson. Everyone volunteered and we met in someone's house.

My family was big on the library too. I remember progressively figuring out different sections of the collection as a kid and feeling like each opened whole new worlds to me. I think there's a sense of curiosity and wonder, even awe, that is still part of my work that started in those library trips

A1: It was being in a teacher inquiry group in Ohio called the Pink TIGers. We met monthly shared a meal and talked about working against homophobia and transphobia in schools, including through #literacies. Across a decade, those folks shaped my thinking about activism, community, and teaching.
