There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

The Trump administration’s proposed budget slashes about 90% of the funding for one of the country’s cornerstone biological and ecological research programs. 🌐🧪 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/31/c...

Inspired by @jtuttlekeane.bsky.social and @ohdearz.bsky.social, here's what the White House proposed budget cuts to NASA would do to the entirety of the agency's Science Mission Directorate. Bloodbath is right.

Cuts to #science of >50% at NASA and >75% at NOAA would end US climate and space science research. NASA cuts are '...an "extinction level" event': arstechnica.com/space/2025/0... "At this funding level, Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research is eliminated...": www.science.org/content/arti...
Graph of science funding of NASA from 1980 until present with estimated 50% cut included. This drops NASA Science to under $4B. Image source: Casey Dreier/The Planetary Society

"Days ago, the Administration’s nominee to lead NASA called for a “new golden age of science and discovery” at the agency. The proposed budget from within the White House — which cuts NASA science by 47% — would plunge NASA into a dark age instead." www.planetary.org/press-releas...

At least three dozen Democrats plan to take over the Senate floor all night tonight, for 30 hours, to oppose Trump's budget office nominee, Russ Vought. “He’s the architect of the dismantling of our federal government,” said Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii). www.huffpost.com/entry/democr...

To steal a phrase from one of my heroes: "there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves." WE are democracy. To federal workers, join a union, remember your oath, and hold the line. To all Americans, get informed and get loud, this is not a drill.
