Bold move, bro
Excerpt from NYT story about Republican House members censuring NC Rep. Chuck Edwards for violating sexual harassment rules. I have highlighted the word “guns”:

The report, which did not name the women, found that they both received numerous gifts from Mr. Edwards, including jewelry totaling nore than $1,000 in value, designer purses, guns, shoes, flowers, a laptop and a cellphone, a KitchenAid mixer, a robotic vacuum, vacations, tickets to performances and one-on-one dinners.

I think the solution to this is to call politics what it really is: society. Sounds a lot different to say: “Why do you always have to make everything about society?” Or: “I’m just kind of an asocial person.” Or: “Ugh, I hate society.”

Bonkers to think that if Elon Musk had been born merely upper middle class, he’d be a mouth-breathing loser with an AI gf & a fleshlight, famous only for a pathetic mass shooting somewhere, & yet his death toll would be negligible compared w/the 100s of thousands of ppl he’s murdered just this year.

Statement from Becca Good, Renee Good’s wife (1 of 3):

First, I want to extend my gratitude to all the people who have reached out from across the country and around the world to support our family.

This kindness of strangers is the most fitting tribute because if you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiated out of her.

Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled. I mean, she didn’t wear glitter but I swear she had sparkles coming out of her pores. All the time. You might think it was just my love talking but her family said the same thing. Renee was made of sunshine.

Renee lived by an overarching belief: there is kindness in the world and we need to do everything we can to find it where it resides and nurture it where it needs to grow. Renee was a Christian who knew that all religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole.Becca Good statement (2 of 3):

Like people have done across place and time, we moved to make a better life for ourselves. We chose Minnesota to make our home. Our whole extended road trip here, we held hands in the car while our son drew all over the windows to pass the time and the miles.

What we found when we got here was a vibrant and welcoming community, we made friends and spread joy. And while any place we were together was home, there was a strong shared sense here in Minneapolis that we were looking out for each other. Here, I had finally found peace and safe harbor. That has been taken from me forever.

We were raising our son to believe that no matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness. Renee lived this belief every day. She is pure love. She is pure joy. She is pure sunshine.

On Wednesday, January 7th, we stopped to support our neighbors. We had whistles. They had guns.Becca Good statement (3 of 3):

Renee leaves behind three extraordinary children; the youngest is just six years old and already lost his father. I am now left to raise our son and to continue teaching him, as Renee believed, that there are people building a better world for him. That the people who did this had fear and anger in their hearts, and we need to show them a better way.

We thank you for the privacy you are granting our family as we grieve. We thank you for ensuring that Renee’s legacy is one of kindness and love. We honor her memory by living her values: rejecting hate and choosing compassion, turning away from fear and pursuing peace, refusing division and knowing we must come together to build a world where we all come home safe to the people we love.

Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents. I did it because the government isn’t. This is what I found.
White words on a black background read:

50+
Immigration agents have the authority to detain whom they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally. We found more than 50 Americans who were held after agents questioned their citizenship. They were almost all Latino.

~130
Agents also can arrest citizens who allegedly interfered with or assaulted officers. We compiled cases of about 130 Americans, including a dozen elected officials, accused of assaulting or impeding officers.

~20
Among the citizens detained are nearly 20 children, including two with cancer.

Losing my mind and what look like video game assets but instead were used to justify war crimes and genocide in the real world
NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war.Our analysis of 43 official IDF videos found recycled 3D environments, spatial inaccuracies, and assets lifted from unrelated artists and institutions. We traced over 30 unique assets to Washington-based 3D creator Ian Hubert, who makes bespoke models created for his sci-fi project Dynamo Dream, available to his Patreon subscribers.

Models of parking lots, antennas, + pipes were repurposed as Hamas and Iranian military sites@evanhill

Fascinating work here tracing how the IDF recycled 3D assets from a cyberpunk sci-fi art project, the Scottish Maritime Museum and elsewhere to populate its widely-seen models of supposed enemy locations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. One of the most infamous, the alleged underground Hamas command center at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, used to justify an unprecedented assault on the biggest medical center in Gaza, was actually an animation the IDF had used the previous year, saying at the time it was a tunnel beneath a UN school.

>> OP: That whole “you’re possessed by a demon” thing seems to be a go-to response for Christian parents whose children won’t fall in line. It’s incredibly abusive - kids have been killed over that lie. I’m sorry you were on the receiving end, but glad you’re no longer under their roof.

This Jewish Currents remembrance of Awdah Hathaleen, a beloved Palestinian man murdered last month in his West Bank village, is absolutely gutting. The ongoing Israeli genocide is not limited to Gaza. Under official sanction, settlers feel free to murder their Palestinian neighbors in cold blood. 💔
On the night before he was killed, Palestinian schoolteacher, activist, and father of three Awdah Hathaleen addressed solidarity activists from around the world in a webinar that we hosted to strengthen support for the Palestinian struggle in the Masafer Yatta region of the West Bank. Awdah was from the Palestinian Bedouin hamlet of Umm al-Khair, where he had been born in 1994, just under 50 years after his family was expelled from the Naqab desert during the Nakba, and a decade after the encroaching Israeli settlement of Carmel was established as part of a strategic corridor of illegal developments designed to systematically expel Masafer Yatta’s rural communities. Awdah played a central role in efforts to counter settler attacks, land expropriation, and state violence throughout the region, all of which have intensified over the last years, especially since October 7th. [THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE IS HIGHLIGHTED:] “Here in Umm al-Khair, every day, something is going to happen. We don’t know when, we don’t know why, we don’t know what. But something will happen,” Awdah shared on the last night of his life. “I want to be safe. I want to tell my family: ‘Nothing is going to happen tomorrow.’”
