i just find backlash against arts criticism so funny. like do you really think it's better if we never say anything negative? ur audiences may not be posting about it but they definitely won't be coming back!

theatre shouldn’t only be for the rich BUT artists deserve to make a buck. so here's how i price my tickets as an indie fringe producer trying to balance my beliefs and my budgets.

Theatre in this country has an affordability problem, and I just don't see how we can defend an artform that charges $104 dollars to see theatre about working class lives. What's theatre for if the only people who can access it are those with privilege? (I saw Break of Day at Malthouse Theatre).

As much as I complain about theatre longer than an hour, I do really love shows that deliberately take up time. I saw a production of The Inheritance a couple years ago which was a six-hour epic about gay people and one of these characters died of AIDS in the first act and then FIVE HOURS LATER…

When I was a bit younger, a bit more naive, I thought that theatre shouldn't just comment on politics things. It had to materially do something to change the world as well. What I have learned is that performance isn't going to materially save the world.

if you live in narrm (melbourne), here's eleven shows you need to see in august which aren't important musical theatre slop (who the fuck can afford $150 to sit in a dress circle anyways)—as compiled by a theatre critic who sees 200+ shows a year.

Here's the top ten shows you need to see this July in Narrm (Melbourne) which you won't see advertised on the side of a bus (yes, this is a Book of Mormon subtweet). My credentials: I've seen 126 shows so far this year lol.

May is dripping with excellent theatre to see in Narrm so this list of nine shows you have to catch this month was soooo hard to make. But I did it, so here are my top picks for theatre to see to expand your mind:

I'm so fucking keen for this show—created and performed by Cheng Lei, an Australian journalist who was detained in China for 1154 days. The team is wildly exciting and I'm just so keen for political theatre that comes up against the dangers of state censorship!! www.artshouse.com.au/events/1...

saw a delightful show called Back to Te Maunga at La Mama on the weekend and wow I just loved it!! a gorgeous new Māori play about brotherhood and how the past bears down on us and colonialism I am a proud hater of realism but Joel Te Teira's lovely layered script cracked my anti-realism heart.

Thinking about what it means to praise art. I’m less interested in technical excellence than I am in art that represents the cultural/political world I want to live in. I want to say ‘this art belongs and should be our artistic baseline moving forward.’ Sort of using taste as a way to make utopia.

Arts criticism & journalism being reduced to marketing is incredibly depressing, and I am thankful for the approximately six people/outlets in the BG space who actually do criticism and/or journalism. I don't condemn the rest but I do feel sorry for them.

Saw Miss Julie last night at fortyfivedownstairs and I’m a little gagged. It’s a fairly strict adaptation of Strindberg’s Miss Julie (which I’ve never seen nor read) set in the melb hospo sector.

Inspirational words about fighting fascism from ANDOR. Now with alt text.
There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And then remember this. The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try.

I’ve always found the signage at Parliament station directing you to either end of the station concourse sooo weird because the entrances to the ‘Collins St’ side of the station are closer on the whole to Bourke st.

It’s been very underreported but the ABC has just gutted its arts and culture team. It will go down from 12 national arts, culture and entertainment reporters to 3. One of those will focused on writing PR for TV shows. It’s vandalism. We covered it on our podcast: podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/l...

Wowee, the outgoing director of Festivals Adelaide has some pretty strong words about the sector. www.indailysa.com.au/news/busines...
Jochym said she had “witnessed several ways in which we collectively have been abdicating responsibility for this remarkable industry”.

“We do it by burying our heads in the sand for fear of upsetting someone above; creating environments where people bury their heads in the sand; minimising our worst; ignoring the real and daily anxiety our teams feel about the precarity and seasonality; failing to properly value the labour, skill and sacrifice required to deliver festivals and events; under resourcing, underpaying, essentially dehydrating this industry and expecting over-delivery; acting like crabs in a bucket; holding onto decades-old grudges or institutional mistrust.

“Pretending like there’s no existential threat to this sector when I’ve cried too many times with people who feel like they’re drowning. Businesses on knife’s edge, contracts drying up and people walking away from careers they love because they can no longer afford to stay.

Here’s a little (big) piece I wrote about Fat Pig, an opera which staged last weekend in Melbourne. It’s not really a review, just me trying to make sense of the feelings that seeing it brought up. It feels pretty scary to be so critical—but then again I’m just so tired of anti-fatness in theatre.

Now I’ve only just watched the first two episodes of Overcompensating but I don’t get the hype at all. I read an American describing it as ‘groundbreaking’ which (if the first two episodes are anything to go by) is just not true. Not sure if I’ll finish the rest of it.

OK. DOCTOR WHO FINALE. MY THOUGHTS. First of all, RTD is really coming for Moffaf’s gig with all this nonsensical plot. The underverse?? Diva what??? Second of all, this pacing is a goddamn dumpster fire and Belinda’s character arc was a fucking MESS….. UNTIL….

From before the campaign began, mainstream media has been trying to engineer an image of young men as being more far right than ever before — culminating in SBS interviewing two right-wing agitators to make its point. No leftist Gen Z men were ever included in the selective framing. SO I DID IT:

That army of right-wing young men coming to save Dutton? A mirage
Political commentators got the read on young men very wrong, in part because they would not be swayed from their US-inspired framing.

This is truly were the worst impulses of Aus mainstream media to push the (sometimes far) right, at the exclusion of the left. I'm in no way saying that Gen Z men are all left radicals & there are definitely problems to deal with but we wont have clarity of we keep going like this
