why the hell is the nation's paper of record trafficking in the laziest, grossest kind of AI slop ("reanimating" long-dead thinkers)?

Opinion | What Would John Maynard Keynes Say About A.I.? The Keynes Bot Told Us.
Nearly a century ago, Keynes predicted that technology would liberate us from work. To imagine what he would think of artificial intelligence today, a Princeton economist used A.I.

yeah, sadly it's hard to see things changing unless Dems take the State Senate, which is conceivable this year... otherwise transit funding just gets caught up in the idiotic rural vs. urban state culture war...

in a sane country, using taxpayer dollars to create propaganda for your personality cult would be grounds for bipartisan impeachment, conviction, and removal from office.

absolutely wack—the original Rocky is a stone cold classic but putting a statue of a fake boxer on the premiere cultural institution in the city is some provincial crap. the prior situation (Rocky "altar" near bottom of steps) was perfect. another example of inept leadership in Philly.

The Rocky statue moved again and is now at the top of the Art Museum steps
The famed statue's new location caps a monthslong series of monumental moves at the Art Museum.

what kind of rig has a 229 gallon tank?! that said in NJ diesel was $6.50/gal when i filled my car on Sunday and that's a cheap gas price state cause of all the oil refineries...and it ain't getting better before November, that's for sure.

most people have no idea about the Social Security income cap because they don't make $184,500/year. eliminating it is a no-brainer and would go a long way toward ensuring the program is funded long term.

yeah that must be it, thanks. think i'm also thinking of some of the "SilverLine" scenarios discussed in the Reimagining Regional Rail stuff mentioned mentioned in this 2022 article. the SEPTA reports now seem to be gone, though. transitcenter.org/a-transit-re...

ugh i feel like i've been hearing about a version of this plan ever since i moved here in 2018—and it obviously makes logical sense and we should do it yesterday—but i'll sadly believe it when i see it. maybe if PA Dems somehow take the State Senate this fall...

Really hard to overstate just how central AI video slop is to the broader authoritarian project. It allows people to visualize fantasies without having to pay the social costs of such actions, while desensitizing people about the act itself. It's 4chan on steroids w a veneer of respectability.

While science journalism layoffs pile up and publications shutter, more science communication than ever is available via other online venues.

one of the first things on deck for the Democratic House majority in 2027 should be impeaching Alito and Thomas (and Hegseth). who cares if the Senate won't convict! it'll allow the airing of tons of dirty laundry and lay the groundwork for court reform. 2027 and 2028 should be impeachment central!

It was a real pleasure to (lightly) edit this interview for publication in @physicstoday.aip.org. 80 years after the first nuclear detonation, over $1 billion of internationally adjudicated damages remain unfunded by the US government. Read the interview to learn more!

really bad look for Philly and PA to have this museum close following the closure of the Atwater Kent Museum in 2018. complete indictment of our hapless city government. (probably the last true political machine in the country!) and Josh Shapiro has got some blame here as well.

wasn't familiar with this story till now (although it's been public since the 90s) but was shocked to see Judith Farquhar, who had a cult of acolytes at UChicago and would occasionally show up to HPS workshops, was one of many who knew that Gajdusek was abusing children and did nothing

The Children a Scientist Took Home

especially with more obscure foreign-language authors whose works are on digital libraries like HathiTrust, applying the rule of the shorter term to the US would allow many more midcentury texts to be easily accessible to scholars who don't have access to a large academic library...

Ryan Dahn @ryandahn.com · 17/08/2026
for a long time, that distinction was practically irrelevant; but now we're seeing works from authors who died in the 1940s or 1950s come into the public domain in Europe—Albert Einstein and Thomas Mann this year!—but whose later works will remain copyrighted in the US for a long time to come.

Ryan Dahn @ryandahn.com · 17/08/2026
the rest of the world long settled on a copyright term of life of the author + 70 (or 50) years; the US, on the other hand, only switched to that system in the 1970s. works published before 1978 generally have a copyright term of 95 years post publication.

Ryan Dahn @ryandahn.com · 17/08/2026
academic gripe: it's very aggravating that US copyright law doesn't include the "rule of the shorter term," which would allow foreign works to fall into the public domain in the US when the copyright term expires in their home country.

I really enjoyed editing this article by three legends of the arms control world. While things may seem bleak—the last bilateral US–Russian arms control deal expired earlier this year—the authors outline how, when political winds allow, scientists can play a key role in nuclear disarmament efforts.

yup. historically people typically want to memory-hole pandemics (I always found it weird that there's very little discussion of the Spanish flu in 1920s literature, for example), but it ain't good for society...

wrote this as a comment on the piece, but one of the worst things about the Covid Dolchstoßlegende is that it's prevented us from having an honest accounting of it all, which would admit that school closures were catastrophic and that outdoor socialization should have been encouraged much earlier on
