Comic. [Two identical machines face each other with a gap between them. Each is mounted on a box with a cable connecting it off-panel, webcams pointed at each other, and two flags at different angles that can move.] [caption] Networking tip: Separate sensitive components with a semaphore gap.

Arrows and dotted lines between players indicate passing or dribbling, but at one point a player simultaneously passes to two different players who both shoot at the goal; the goalie can only defend against one.] [caption] The math department team’s opponents hate it when Banach passes to Tarski.

Sports Commentary xkcd.com/3262/
Comic. [A person and a second person with a ponytail sitting at a table with a screen showing a soccer game behind them.] PERSON 1: They could be in trouble. Over the last 36 years, they’ve gone 0 for 2 when they’ve scored in the 37th minute to lead 2-1 against a team whose country comes before theirs alphabetically. Thinking back to one of the greatest hater editorials of all time, along with its sheepish correction (49 years later): 🧪https://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/arts/1920editorial-full.pdf
His Plan Is Not Original.

That Professor GODDARD, with his "chair" in Clark College and the countenancing of the Smithsonian Institution, does not know the relation of action to reaction, and of the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react --to say that would be absurd. Of course he only seems to lack the knowledge ladled out dally in high schools.JULY 17, 1969: On Jan. 13, 1920, Topics of The Times, an editorial- page feature of The New York Times, dismissed the notion that a rocket could function in a vacuum and commented on the ideas of Robert H. Goddard, the rocket pioneer, as follows: "That Professor Goddard, with his 'chair' in Clark College and the countenancing of the Smithsonian Institution, does not know the relation of action to reaction, and of the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react - to say that would be absurd. Of course he only seems to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools." Further investigation and experimentation have confirmed the findings of Isaac Newton in the 17th century and it is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum as well as in an atmosphere. The Times regrets the error.

Why do you think that? ECC ram and u.3 and sas storage and server CPUs are all incompatible with all home equipment, and second hand TPUs seem unlikely to be very useful even for people who want that at home.

Also, it sounds incredibly tedious and stupid to have to explain to normal people for the next thousand years that yes, there was encryption involved, but also yes, all your messages are fully readable by Bluesky staff and Bluesky hackers and any government who cares to subpoena Bluesky

Why bother then? Why introduce another crappy messaging system and then have to explain forever to people that their messages are encrypted only in a completely useless way and are readable by Bluesky staff and hackers and trivially subpoenable by any government bluesky’s corporate structure touches?

Or go the other way and create a permanent delivery organisation that just continuously builds public transport infrastructure across Britain for the next century, avoiding so many contractors and benefiting from growing skills and lessons learnt over time.

I found so many comments by journalists about pre-2020 twitter to be completely inscrutable until I eventually realised they were all just scrolling through the ”for you” feed instead of aerially following people they thought were interesting and then reading their posts. Surreal cultural barrier.

Is there any purported rationale for why this could be a good thing for the people it affects or is it just the government saying “we’re cunts and we think the British people want to see more of that”?

It really is rather odd how universal the conflation of it all is, even by people who presumably understand the difference and would directly benefit (as would we all) if the public did too.

How is it like the House of Lords at all? It’s fully democratically elected, using an elaborate multi member preferential party list system per state, on a separate timetable to the lower house, as well as existing inside a real written constitution instead of made up conventions.

is the communist … kayfabe still much of factor in limiting what is seen as acceptable / possible / tolerable in government even when the consequences are so severe and unwanted? it doesn’t seem like the private sector feels very bound to appear as humble working folk contributing as best they can.
