Also, to get ahead of this - yes, I did share a reading slot with Peter F. Hamilton, and no, I didn't know about this. I think my stance on AI has nuance, but I think I have been clear (here and at the weekend) that I don't approve of projects where the majority of creative work is done by AI.

There is no doubt they have fucked up by releasing a charter that looks to future conduct only rather than accompanying it with a campaign to get the government to compensate writers over datasets. There's nothing here that says they're not in support of that, but there's nothing that says they are.

My dad contractually can't bad mouth him, the film, or walk away without being sued for breach of contract. He couldn't even release the statement he wanted to.
It's fucked up. He's handcuffed to this stupid project, and swaths of people have instantly turned their back on him without knowing any of the facts.
Ben Shapiro got Mexicans to abandon one of their heroes, got his own name to the top of google's searches, and made us look like angry fools lacking any nuance. He wins.”

ASL is inviting applications for the role of co-editor of New Writing Scotland, from writers currently based in Scotland. Applicants should have a strong publishing record of their own, with a focus on poetry; previous editorial experience would be an advantage. The post will run for up to three years from 2027, for volumes 45, 46, and 47, publishing in 2027, 2028, and 2029 (dependent on funding).

Our editors jointly select approximately 50 pieces – poetry and prose – from the English- and Scots-language submissions we receive each year. The submissions are anonymised, and we provide editors with paper copies to read. As an editor, we’d ask you to attend launches in Edinburgh and Glasgow (travelling expenses would be paid). Editors receive an annual £1500 stipend and full editorial credit.

We encourage applications from all backgrounds and particularly welcome applications from people who are under-represented within the sector, including from BPOC applicants (Black people and People of Colour), disabled people, LGBTQIA+ applicants and those from a low socioeconomic background.
