Yeah they’re not super fancy but I think floresheims are pretty good value for the price (have bought a few pairs over the years) and I’m mad that they’re Trump coded now

A big part of the conservative movement is retconning 20th century American history with pure ideology: the New Deal was tyranny, Joe McCarthy was good, Richard Nixon was treated unfairly and his only real sin was not being conservative enough. SCOTUS is giving this retcon the force of law

Clearly Cox believes that partisanship is more important than civility in some circumstances or he wouldn’t have backed Trump in the general election. He should be asked to explain in detail how he weighs one against the other if he’s gonna be allowed to wag his finger at others over the matter

The segment on last night’s newshour was pathetic. Bennett did challenge Cox a bit on how Trump stands against everything Cox claims to believe yet Cox still backed Trump in 2024, and Cox’s explanation was basically just “oh but I didn’t back him in the primary” and then they just moved on

A season where he threw 250+ innings with an ERA over 4 and another when he went 17-13. These are the kind of beautiful pitching lines they took from us

This is corruption of the highest order. Susan Collins delivered millions in taxpayer dollars for a corrupt donor bankrolling her campaign, and then Donald Trump helped her cover it up. No wonder she voted with him 96% of the time and has rubberstamped his agenda to hurt Maine.

i don't believe talarico is a bigot. im pretty sure he isnt. but if he apparently "has to" answer bad faith questions in a way that appears to compromise on the rights of one group of people being repressed to get elected, it's fair to ask what else he will "have to" do once he's in office

The $5000 dividend thing is stupid and obviously a lie and I wish the media covered it accordingly, but, as much as Trump loves to break the law, I do not think the fake dividend proposal is illegal based on the statute people are sharing on here

This is ADL's solitary statement after Nazis won state elections in Germany for the first time since the Holocaust:
ADL
@ADL
Ed Sheeran’s fans came for a concert, not performative, biased and hateful anti-Israel “activism” from his opener, Macklemore.

Imagine being a Jewish or Israeli fan who came with family or friends to enjoy the show, only to be confronted with this hostility from the stage. Or feeling so unwelcome by the opening act that you leave early.

This isn’t new for Macklemore. He has a record of demonizing Israel and Israelis, falsely accusing Israel of genocide and engaging in antisemitic rhetoric and behavior.

This is completely unacceptable.

Wasn't Ringo pro-brexit? Anyway yeah Lennon doesn't strike me someone who'd have gone anti-vax but complaining about about cancel culture and embracing anti-trans stuff seem like pretty good possibilities

What I cannot stand are self referential ad campaigns, where getting the "jokes" (scare quotes because they're always unfunny) requires having seen other commercials in the ad campaign, like a freaking Marvel movie. The Liberty ones are some of the most insufferable

Maybe the obituary reference was aspirational
Tweet from the odious Bethany Mandel during COVID, in which she declared that she’d rather people die than her be inconvenienced: “You can call me a Grandma killer. I’m not sacrificing my home, food on the table, all of our docs and dentists, every form of pleasure (museums, zoos, restaurants), all my kids’ teachers in order to make other people comfortable. If you want to stay locked down, do. I’m not.”

The argument is basically (a) that Bates is badly run (maybe so), and (b) therefore academic generally has lost its way. There is essentially nothing connecting (a) and (b). Bates and its specific problems are simply assumed to be representative…but whether that’s true is kind of important!

Revealing post. Republican ghouls are good at charming reporters in private, so reporters think it’s just an act when they attack the press. But actually the charm routine they put on for reporters is the act, and it would be nice if we had a DC press corps that didn’t keep falling for it

Another reason to do scotus jurisdiction stripping plus creation of a constitutional court with final say on such matters. President AOC or Kamala or whoever gets to appoint the whole thing at the outset, so if there are a few mediocre centrists like Kagan, nbd. (Fwiw, Sotomayor is mostly ok imo.)

And the thing is, the centrist pundits are well aware that this isn’t how voters choose candidates—there’s enough political science research on the subject and Yglesias himself did a favorable Vox write up on the Achen/Bartels book some years back—and yet…

Russell Sharp @russms.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
The version of centrist popularism we get from Yglesias et al presumes voters are intimately familiar with the specific wonky areas where Democrats are supposedly too far left and vote accordingly…but that conception of politics makes absolutely no sense if the “folk theory” of democracy isn’t true.

Russell Sharp @russms.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
The funny thing about Yglesias is that he used to tweet stuff like “the way to win is to adopt all of my personal substantive and stylistic ideological preferences” as a sarcastic bit making fun of others, but that now appears to be a genuine expression of what he believes

Russell Sharp @russms.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
And that court doesn't *have* to be the Supreme Court. Congress could create a specific constitutional court and strip SCOTUS of the relevant jurisdiction under the exceptions and regulations clause of Article III

When the GOP senators who voted to impeach Trump and subsequently lost their seats die they will (with the exception of former Pres nominee Romney) be footnotes in the news. Because he sold out our country and stayed in office when he died, Graham gets different treatment. A lesson!
