When people I've known for a while compliment me on my weight loss, I feel like I'm in an odd place. You could call it a 'lifestyle change'. But it's also accurately described as 'long term, minor starvation due to poverty'. Both are accurate, but I kinda wish it was on purpose.

This is indeed the best way to look at it. Even if you consider the quality level to be up to par, the fact that people can and will just spam the hell out of it will be disruptive to the community at the very least. Celebrate the real artists who post content and give their work room to breathe.

I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

Only value proposition for most people is going to be using local models, and those are so much worse. Hoping we'll see the hyperscalers implode and the bubble burst, then we'll be back to the main thing being local AI stuff. Probably powered by cheap Nvidia cards, but can't rebottle everything.

The CEOs of AI companies are remarkably tone deaf most of the time, and I think that is driving a lot of the rejection of AI in the general public. Hard to gain support when 'yeah we want to take your job and dignity' rolls so glibly off their tongues.

One of the things that I find to be interesting about the GenAI discourse is the rather huge difference in attitude for Asian countries, where the ratio of anti vs pro gen AI is flipped from the US and Europe. And part of me wonders if the fact that they don't hear the AI bros yap constantly.

While Destiny lost me back in the transition from 1 to 2, it has been a game that has been ongoing for quite a long time. A flawed, troubled game, true, but an old IP that a lot of people enjoyed. It's sad seeing them having to pack things up, and I hope that things improve.

Still remember many hours of trekking to the Temple of Uggalepih so I could fight a SUMMONER TONBERRY in order to STEAL ITS GLOVES so I could then keep Carbuncle out ALL THE TIME as a summoner. And if the eventual 6070 can match the 5090 for a reasonable consumer price, its going to put the ability to use AI on a fairly significant scale easily within the PC enthusiast range of affordability. It's sadly not going away - but it won't be a billionaire thing either.

As a graphics card it sucks because of no drivers, and overall a 5090 is better useful bang for your buck, but if the price comes down from enterprise to consumer levels it will be... interesting.

The crazy thing is all of these GPUs in storage that will never be installed once the data center buildout collapses. Are they going to get shredded, or go out into the consumer market to try and recoup some cost? You can plug an H100 AI GPU into a standard PCIe slot after all.

Video is a lot more resource intensive, hence why Sora exploded, but it falls under the same principal - it just requires much beefier hardware and a lot more time. But if things collapse and Nvidia actually starts producing consumer GPUs again, that'll change - a 5090 goes a long way for AI gen.

People who lean on actual big companies to do image generation will definitely feel some sting, but we're never actually going to see image gen go away - it's become so light weight that its possible to get a local image gen model running on even an average gaming PC these days.

'Folks' in this case being the large companies who are burning millions upon millions of tokens for 'AI work'. And may those people rest in flaming wreckage - its going to accelerate the hyperscaler market bubble popping and that cannot come soon enough. We drastically need the correction.

Well that post went poof, but it was someone celebrating how a coder was confuzzled about how they were using tens of thousands of dollars of tokens in their coding work. And make no mistaken, once a lot of these heavily subsidized subscriptions for API use go away, its gonna be brutal for folks.

Love the energy here, but worth remembering that image generation is one of the most light weight AI tasks as well. The people burning millions of tokens are doing insane agent based coding work - they have calls to the API in their general workflows so they are constantly pinging these models.

Putting aside all the moral and practical opposition to AI being used in the workplace... ...why can't they at least use a COOL evil AI that actually works? They could have sold our humanity to Skynet or Megatron and instead they decided to go with Cy-Kill from Go Bots for budgetary reasons...
