Multi-class classification was at the frontier and mostly unsolved. I think Google had a research team that had gotten pretty far by 2010. Boltzmann machines were the hot thing. I tried building a news service this way in fall of 2010 and quickly gave up. Way beyond my knowledge!

Yes! I mean “intuitively” to me, what makes them emoji rather than just symbols/icons is that they convey something that’s complicated to express in words

Rasmus Andersson @rsms.me · 19/07/2026
[As a bystander in this interesting conversation you’re having] IMHO to be “emoji” they need to convert emotion. Ie a star or pointing hand does not, but a smiling face or a confetti puff does

Ended up making a whole data vis for showing the massive number of deaths over the course of the war. Three.js and canvas rendering 9000+ subtly moving 3D flowers here. Plus a lot of tricks to make it performant across devices. (though if you see anything janky, lmk)

May I proudly present... Super Wild Cart kinda Excite Truck × Flicky × Donkey Kong's Crash Course Still *so much* to do but it is fun already! Pretty much locked 60fps, and do I have a story to tell about the toolchain…but that's one for another time. #superwildcart #snesdev

It actually does work but the left side still has contextual alternates enabled, which happens to automatically apply the same glyph substitutions. Thanks! I’ll fix!

Thanks for sharing! We did the exact same thing ha ha. But we’re debating changing from P3 extended to BT.2020 (I’ve noticed that photos taken with my iPhone are now encoded in that color space)

Rasmus Andersson @rsms.me · 02/07/2026
Neat to see you also added HDR support! We started working on that for Playbit and the impact is deep, specifically in regards to color space and os-window-transparency that requires premultiplied alpha from the shader. How did you go about color space for this? Just sticking to sRGB or bt2020?

Brutify, my image optimiser app is OUT NOW! Built for Apple silicon & Intel Macs, it's a modern, fast, well-considered alternative to ImageOptim. Its processing engines are customisable, and you can add more if you have specific additional requirements. www.gingerbeardman.com/apps/brutify/

Great read. Thank you! I’m curious: Does Alice need a calculator or even a computer to do her work? Does she solve differential equations with paper and pen? What I’m thinking about is what constitutes a helpful tool. Is a LLM like a calculator or like a tutor that does your homework for you?

Instacart is a dumpster fire. Their iOS app is probably the worst app ever built by a big company whose business depends on people using their app. They are around because there’s no decent competition.
