I've found that novelty is like 50% of marketing. People learn to detect and filter out cliches quickly. And it makes sense: if you describe your product the same way as everyone else, the product itself is also probably uninteresting. Find a new way to say it. Find a new way to show it.

The most annoying problem for Zero's launch was what bug tracker to use. GitHub is way too slow, and Linear doesn't have public bugs or permissions – both required for OSS projects. This was driving me nuts, until I realized the only possible solution… ⏩ bugs.rocicorp.dev/issue/0

People seemed interested in this post, so I'll expand slightly. Building developer tools is insanely hard because many (most?) software engineers would build developer tools if they had their choice. When I started out as a programmer, my dream was to work at Microsoft on Visual Studio, or .Net.

🌶️: Networked apps that are intended to be used offline commonly should have custom, first-class UX for offline. Not just merge UI. Not an edge case. Every time you go offline there should be the equiv of trumpets and fanfare. You should know you're going offline, and what that means.
