Cover reveal! The keywords I sent the press were “historical,” “natural,” and “multimedia” and I’d say they nailed it. Featuring my (book’s) main man Humphry Repton on the left there. Coming from Yale University Press this fall.
Image of a book cover with the title The Book of Improvement, subtitle Media Landscapes in the Global Enlightenment, and author Rachael King. The cover features a tree in the center with two men with surveying equipment to the left of the trunk and two men reclining under an umbrella to the right of the trunk. There are a river and rolling hills in the background.

Sarah @duckrabbit.bsky.social gave hands down the funniest keynote talk I have ever seen, at CSECS in 2017(maybe?). Somehow this devastating and gorgeous essay is also laugh-out-loud funny.

Interesting! In the book I talk a bit about how the British compared their concept of improvement to others.

Still my favorite line from one of the reader reports: “This is the book about improvement feminist scholars didn’t know they were waiting for.”

“Rachael King’s immersive, nuanced, multi-media survey refuses to take an 18th-century buzzword—improvement—at face value. Her methodologically daring study weighs improvement's sometimes regressive politics against the innovative means of its production.”—Jayne Lewis, UC Irvine

“An elegant and persuasive meditation on improvement’s relationship with the rich variety of eighteenth-century print, The Book of Improvement will quickly become essential reading for anyone interested in Enlightenment’s trickiest term.”—Jon Mee, University of York

Some very smart people have said some very nice things about it. “The book is a tour-de-force work of cultural criticism that explains how and why we seek the history of ideas, and a landmark contribution to the humanities.”—David Alff, SUNY-Buffalo

We had to say goodbye to 16-year-old Frankie 6 weeks after another major loss. Got these two on the right (Taylor and Jimmy) as kittens a few months later and they have brought so much joy to our lives. Very much like Frankie and her brother Dante reincarnated, but now brown.
