“Dual-use” doesn’t just apply to defence. jenditchburn.bsky.social & rsamson.bsky.social argue the new minority govt should adopt a dual-use lens for all major policies: supporting national priorities and responding to the needs of rural and Western communities. 🔗 policyoptions.irpp.org?p=116822

🇨🇦 Prolonged tariffs could trigger lasting economic shifts. Canada needs a long-term approach—starting with meaningful EI reform. It’s time to act. Rosanna Tamburi & @ricardochejfec.bsky.social from the @irpp.org’s research team provide recommendations: ⬇️ 🔗 policyoptions.irpp.org?p=116135

It’s time to put Canada’s employment insurance program on solid footing
Rather than introducing a flurry of stop-gap measures as it did during COVID, Ottawa should make meaningful, long-lasting changes to the EI system.

We live in a dangerous world. Canada needs to bulk up
The country needs to get serious and get building – more housing, more transit and a more robust defence policy. We need to get too big to push around.

The @irpp.org hosted a series of workshops, and published several reports, looking at EI reform between 2021 and 2023. It isn't easy to increase the number of people that are eligible for EI and the income received on EI, while trying to keep premiums low for workers and businesses.

Employment Insurance reform could help Canadian workers that face job loss if the U.S. imposes tariffs. EI also acts as an economic stabilizer, helping people who are unemployed continue to purchase goods and services from local businesses. 🧵
