My daughter and I just got back from an 8 day BWCAW trip, and it was a funny birds and bees trip. We saw at least one or two massive eagles each day, swans, a kingfisher catching a fish, blue jays and a great northern portage chicken. My daughter claims it was a grouse, but I saw what I saw. 1/2

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

Trump is historically unpopular, launching an illegal war no one wants, doing everything he can to increase prices, and breaking records for corruption. Any Democrat running for office who embraces transphobic talking points is acting like a loser in a defensive crouch. Nobody likes losers.

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

This is an important read for the Twin Cities feed. I think we should all have a plan in place to protect our own polling places.

I just quote posted someone making a great point about how our healthcare system gaslights women/moms and how that needs to stop if we want to prevent health grifting. I agree with everything the OP wrote. As I continued reading the comments I decided to delete my repost. So much misogyny!

Your regular reminder that our unhoused neighbors are just that - our neighbors. We spent the whole winter learning a whole new way to love our neighbors here in Minnesota - that extends to our neighbors without shelter.

Every inch of my body is itchy. Like I’ve fallen in a patch of cactus prickles. Most of the year I love the little stand of ironwood trees on the south side of my house. But the hot dry summer has made the seed pods (think miniature hop clusters) extra prickly. And somehow they get everywhere!

My husband and I were once 14 miles into an 18 mile hike, late afternoon, and passed two women heading the opposite way to the campsite we’d left in the early morning. We tried to gently hint they should bail, but it was clear they were not listening. On the ferry ride back to the mainland…

Perry: Republicans fought ‘indoctrination.’ Now they’re telling students what to study.
The conservative attack on higher education in states like Iowa is hard to watch. But it also provides an opportunity for blue states like Minnesota.

I feel the need to share my second favorite bike accident story, considerably less cool than the last. My husband and I were commuting by bike to our downtown jobs. I decided I would hop the curb like him, but I failed at my timing. He heard a sound and looked back as I was entirely vertical.

Everyone is talking about bike helmets so I’ll share my favorite bike accident story. A friend of mine was hit by a deer while biking from Minneapolis to Crystal on his morning commute. The deer was hit by a car, and was airborne when it struck my friend! His helmet definitely saved him.

My boulevard tree gets watered 1” per week, same as the rest of my yard. It always keeps its leaves weeks after the rest of the street, and despite the best efforts of Asplund(may they suffer wet socks for eternity) looks noticeably better than all the other trees on the street. Water your trees!

Lately the internet has decided No Child Left Behind was a social promotion policy. It absolutely was not, in fact it was the opposite. And while there are a lot of problems with the testing system that resulted from NCLB, the most powerful thing it did was give us school achievement data by race.

If you’re mayak egg curious but don’t like eggs, mayak marinated tofu is spectacular! It only needs about an hour to marinate too, so it’s fine for last minute. We had it tonight, cool, over rice, with soy glazed eggplant and very plain sauteed broccolini. The Minn Tofu soft is my favorite tofu!

I think this is a crucial point! People are playing with their children’s lives while they themselves are safe! I have empathy for vaccine hesitant parents, but gently pointing out to them that they are denying protection to their children that they themselves enjoy could be a winning conversation!

I made the King Arthur Flour bake of the week from last week, no bake chocolate cheesecake bars. I subbed Glutino sandwich cookies to make them gluten free. They were quite nice! I could have added more salt. I was surprised how firm they were! 9-10, will make again.
