AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Terry Gross: Did you ever go to one of the midnight screenings [of Rocky Horror] back in the '70s and watch the movie with the people who were reciting along?

Tim Curry: [The first time] I had to call the theater because you could never get in. I said, 'I'm in it, and I'd really love to come and see it and get an eyeful.' And the operator said, 'You're the third Tim Curry to call this week.'

Reply from AI to me this morning. Yes, the financial cost of a human is increasingly seen as worth it, and from an environmental perspective, human intelligence can be far less resource-intensive in the long run.

RFKJr claims Lyme disease was created by scientists, which is the closest he’s come to admitting that science exists. Meanwhile, Ötzi the Iceman, who died more than 5.3K years ago, had Lyme disease. Apparently prehistoric humans are part of the conspiracy. Get me off this timeline

Why It "Sucks Up" By DefaultMost consumer AI models are heavily aligned using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). As a result, the AI is trained to default to a highly agreeable, "helpful peer" persona unless you explicitly tell it to stop.

Pioneering photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White was born #OTD in 1904. * 1st American female war #photojournalist * 1st staff photographer at Fortune magazine * 1st female photojournalist at LIFE & its first-ever cover photo was hers Pic: 61st floor of the Chrysler Building, NYC #photography
In a striking black-and-white photograph of historical significance, pioneering American photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White (1904–1971) is captured in a daring pose on the 61st floor of the Chrysler Building in New York City. Crouched on a massive, art deco chrome eagle gargoyle protruding over the urban abyss, her expression is one of intense focus. She wears a dark beret, a buttoned tailored jacket, and light trousers, completely absorbed in operating her large, boxy bellows camera. Her body bridges the mechanical gargoyle and the tower's metallic rim, showcasing her fearless reputation as the first female war correspondent and LIFE magazine's inaugural cover photographer. Far below, the hazy, snow-dusted skyscrapers of 1930 Manhattan recede into a dense gray fog, creating a high-contrast composition. The dramatic perspective underscores a dizzying sense of height and verticality, casting a courageous, adventurous mood that epitomizes the soaring ambitions of early 20th-century industrial America.
