Here I am, finding myself talking about Alaric again. In this first book, he doesn't know Vera or Mabel. He's on the trail of an emerging pattern of rebellious activity against the Combine & what he considers to be "perfect order". That pattern he's chasing is indirectly related to our protagonists.

I knew it was gonna be something from Mabel's 1st chapter. I had to reread to figure out which scene. I love it b/c her clay figures say everything about how she sees herself in relation to others. Ever the caregiver; the fixer. It's exactly what lands her in the middle of a galactic revolution.

She opened her jar of softstone, scooping the material out and putting it on her makeshift worktable. It was cold and slightly damp, though it had dried a little after being taken from the mine. She looked over at the other softstone figures she had made that sat on a shelf together. Mabel had crafted each of them after days like this, when she felt like she wasn’t the woman she should be.

One was of Corin, to whom she couldn’t give the life of authenticity he deserved. Another was of her father, who she couldn’t take from the mines and give a softer life in his old age. There were a few now that represented fallen miners; people whose toil for this damned machine had finally killed them. The figures were a way of honoring and caring for them, even if she felt powerless to do anything real for them.

Finished drafting part 1/8 of book 1 of my planned trilogy. It's slow going, but such is working a day job or two while you write. I've created a couple new side characters and done a massive amount of worldbuilding while writing the first six chapters. I have an outline but I'm also kinda pantsing.

Vera's eyes are a deep green, which is related to her half-Terravik heritage & the nature magic that species uses. Nila, Vera's co-pilot, has stormy grey eyes; typical for the Zephyrax species. She can also see gravitational indicators that others can't, which is something trained Zephyrax can do.

Bits and pieces of other people (and myself) end up in my characters; not on purpose but incidentally. Usually I only notice the similarities after I've started really developing a character and I'm like ...woops.

The Aetheri (Alaric's species, I promise I'll talk about a different character eventually) prefer to communicate telepathically, since they can. They even have their own magi-tech that lets them do it over distances.

Alaric has a pretty tragic relationship with family. His mother was a general in the Internal Stabilization Corps (same enforcement agency he joined) and died during the Combine's failed attempt at annexing a Frontier world. His father is distant, consumed with his career as a Combine bureaucrat.

Alaric Whitlock, my space cop antagonist POV character, definitely does some physical combat training with his superior officer (who is also his lover). Given that he's very much into his career (and his lover), I would say he enjoys it.
