That sounds fun! I also remember First Class from that era was also good

Everything through AOA is lots of fun imho. I lost track of the x-comics in the late 90s when I got more into indies like Strangers in Paradise and Love and Rockets

Ensign Ro(wan) @rowanchurch.bsky.social · 8h

Exactly! I have a huge soft spot for the “Multiple Man and Strong Guy” era of X-Factor, and want to experience those comics again

Ensign Ro(wan) @rowanchurch.bsky.social · 8h

I got in originally in the post-Claremont era; Phalanx Covenant was my first crossover. So I want to experience the old side books like New Mutants too.

My planned run through is all the X-comics up through Phalanx Covenant and then only Generation X until Age of Apocalypse (Gen X #4).

Nice! I’m thinking about doing the same run. Maybe if I can catch up we can do a book club or something lol

Also, the BGC soundtrack is so good; there’s an entire album’s worth of Priss and the Replicants songs across all the episodes.

When I was editing the first novel, I had no magical girl experience, so I was giving advice based on the next best things: Bubble Gum Crisis and X-Men

Continuing postober with a comic about shaving my head

Things I didn’t anticipated about shaving my head: zero bed head; max speed showers; both ends of the gender slider unlocked; skincare goes all the way up

Fun fact: Debra (the reason for the yogurt) was inspired by someone I met at a friend of a friend's garden party 20 years ago. I gravitated towards her and she took me on as a challenge. the things she said are still lodged in my brain. I write Debra as a tiny act of devotion to her and that moment.

Gunbuster was the first anime to make me cry, like really ugly cry, at the end. It holds a very special place in my heart, and is a gift I enjoy being able to give to others. Happy 38th birthday 🎉

"JK Rowling is already a billionaire and everyone already knows about Harry Potter, what's the point of boycotting?" Nobody thinks boycotting will bankrupt her. We know she's gonna die rich. We're just asking you to show a shred of solidarity with trans folk. Absolute low bar bare minimum shit.

I like that the spirit of the internet is that anyone can become a weird little culture hero with a hundred fans of varying interest levels. I dunno that seems neat to me as an artist. That’s my favorite level of comic book hero. I want Jade Evergreen to become an artistic cryptid like that.

0243

Ensign Ro(wan) @rowanchurch.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Their Tool worship is not a feature of the band I even liked. But I know a lot of their fans came for the Tool-ism worship of their earlier albums. Anyway it’s wild how every artist is kind of a church which is to say this is what religion co-opted from culture. Anyway thought it was interesting.

But this is good! The real perverts know all the good shit is in the apocrypha, the esoteric conversations and re-interpretations and works of devotion and works so blasphemous they get excommunicated from the genre until they do good works again. I love Söen because I loved Martin Lopez from Opeth.

150

Ensign Ro(wan) @rowanchurch.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Like, you can trace Wobbler back to Yes, who themselves worshipped Simon And Garfunkel. This is different from a Söen, who track back to Tool, who trace back through King Crimson and the beat poet folk of Dylan.

Ensign Ro(wan) @rowanchurch.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Neo-prog as a genre is really interesting because it’s the fourth generation of the folk cultural shift into rock music, itself a fraction if the wider pop music movement. So like, these are true fucking believers. It’s essential faith base music for their particular churches, their gods long past.
