I find it really confusing that being an expert in one field makes some folks more convinced in their expertise outside their field, rather than less. Seems like experts, of all people, should know how hard it is to come by expertise, and notice the kinds they haven't worked hard enough to claim.

"My kids bought these businesses, so I'm completely uninvolved now in their success or failure" only works if you hate your children and, oh wait, I'm being informed you can hate your children and also grift ceaselessly on their behalf and also through them to your own benefit

One thing that's been bugging me today: people who claim Dolly Parton wasn't political. False. She was very political. Her art and life's work were about interrogating power + amplifying the powerless. You only think she wasn't political because she did this by example, not bullshit slogans.

Headlines: Such-and-such technology may someday be as smart as human brains! Reminder: *We already have human brains.* Billions of them. Most of them living in poverty and being exploited for the obscene benefit of a tiny number of the worst people in the world.

Anyway. Just some things I'm thinking about as I gear up for a week of institutional encouragement to embrace our robot overlords. Sure hoping I'm wrong; this bubble can't burst fast enough for higher ed. (5/5)

OR, could we create an educational system that favors process thinking; tangible, practical results; and self-critique over final products and scores? We need to stop frittering around the edges of an outmoded way of measuring mastery and get purposeful about what we ask of today's students. (4/5)

And 2. "That's it - we have to go back to bluebooks, in-class assessments, and hand-written tests." Great, so I guess we're just going to scrap universal design and let our disabled, deployed, employed, chronically ill, care-taking, non-traditional, and/or online students twist in the wind? (3/?)

Plus, ease and seamlessness are what make AI so seductive. Students don't need us to teach them to push buttons. They need us to develop their capacities for critical thinking and discernment via experiences and novel problems. This has always been the work; all that's changed is the urgency. (2/?)

Two arguments I'm tired of hearing about AI in education: 1. "We have to teach students how to use it; AI is inevitable and they need to know how to use it to get ahead." Okay, except is it? Sure seems like folks are increasingly rejecting AI products as careless, lazy, and unreliable(1/?)

I've loved watching the U.S. tean. I love our players. But given the way things unfolded above their heads leading up to this game, I'm glad Belgium won. Any victory we could've achieved from here on in would have been tainted. Such hateful lust for ruining even the things he doesn't care about.

imputing consciousness to software is 1. factually wrong, 2. pathetically credulous, 3. dangerous, 4. demeaning to actual life. i admit that it's 2 that pisses me off the most but 3 and 4 are the true problem and they weren't the case, 2 would be less aggravating

As long as I live, I'll never understand the need to wallow in and spread one's defeatism. Does it comfort you to sow your hopelessness in others? Does it make you feel intellectually and morally superior to people who hope and work for change? Is it how you reconcile yourself to inaction?

This painting is extraordinary, and it kinda makes me angry that I've only ever been acquainted with The Scream. Could be a sign of my own limited cultural capital, but I'm guessing I'm not the only casual art appreciator for whom the ubiquity of that painting has literally eclipsed this knowledge

I struggle with this as well, but I'm not ready to concede our symbols and institutions. There's patriotism, and then there's nationalism. I have never been a flag-waver, but I'm an election official, a National Parks visitor, an educator. That's my team, my flag, my pool. They can't have it.

I do think there's an intermediate zone where a layperson can intuit the invisible skill layer, even if they can't name it or point to it. Meanwhile, I suspect AI can not (so far), in no small measure because it lacks cultural capital.

I've seldom felt more connected to an author (or, for that matter, to humanity at large) than while in a liminal space tens of thousands of feet in the air, sharing a laugh with an uncredited advertising copy writer over products no one asked for and the unhappy souls who would pay money for them

Anyone else look back fondly on the unhinged descriptions of the Skymall catalog, plainly written by people paid too little to be proper corporate shills, or else, as I suspect, by the greatest authors of our time trying to outrun their writer's block via a cheeky side hustle?
