Just accepted: The Identity of Stem Cell Kinds – Guglielmo Militello, Louis Paré, Eve Gazave & Lucie Laplane Abstract in alt text or read it here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/... #philsci #philsky #hpbio
ABSTRACT. Although they share a same function and definition, there is a wide diversity across stem cells, reflected by the fact that stem cells are categorized into various types and subtypes. This diversity among stem cells raises a key philosophical question: do stem cells belong to a natural kind? Claims and arguments made by biologists and philosophers, far from converging toward a consensual response, highlight the need for more (interdisciplinary) investigation to advance this question. In response to this challenge, we explore the hypothesis that a phylogenetic approach may offer a productive framework for addressing these conceptual tensions. After describing the strengths and limitations of such a strategy, we discuss how it can advance fields like regenerative medicine and cancer therapies by clarifying stem cell diversity and improving therapeutic strategies.

Happy to share our new article on academic freedom. @paulita.bsky.social, Christiane Thompson and Gregor Fabian examine how academic rank shapes experiences, expectations and perceptions of restrictions on academic freedom, based on a survey of 9.083 academics in Germany. doi.org/10.1111/1468...
Screenshot showing abstract: This article investigates the relationship between academic career ranks and restrictions on academic freedom. Drawing on a representative survey of 9083 full-time academics at German higher education institutions, we examine how academics across different career ranks assess their freedom in teaching and research. Although precarious employment conditions and professional hierarchies may suggest otherwise, our findings show that doctoral candidates and postdocs on fixed-term contracts do not report experiencing restrictions on their academic freedom significantly more often compared to tenured professors. However, distinguishing between experienced restrictions, on the one hand, and expectations of restrictions as well as broader perceptions of academic freedom on the other, we find that non-tenured academics report more often to expect or perceive their academic freedom to be restricted compared to professors. We explain these rank-based differences with a chilling effect generated by a polemical and polarized discourse on ‘cancel culture.’ Academics on fixed-term contracts are more likely to be receptive to often polemical debates on ‘cancel culture’ and for the concerns that come with it. This suggests that structural employment insecurity plays a key role in shaping how academics assess their academic freedom. Our results challenge simplified accounts of ‘cancel culture’ by showing that discourse and institutional hierarchies intersect to produce differentiated vulnerabilities within academia. Although based in Germany, the findings speak to broader international concerns about restrictions on academic freedom and precarious academic labour.

Deciding when a new experimental system is worth developing is costly & challenging. Vallejos-Baccelliere offers a framework grounded in 3 exp. virtues: opening data domains, enabling fine-grained interventions & reducing theoretical dependence 👇 link.springer.com/article/10.1... #philsci #histsci
First page of the EJPS article titled "Material networks, experimental virtues, and the pursuitworthiness of scientific experimentation" by Gabriel Vallejos-Baccelliere.

Abstract
Experimentation plays a central role in most contemporary science, but it is also a complex and resource-intensive activity. Hence, deciding when the development of an experimental system (ES) is worthy of pursuit is a non-trivial epistemic and practical challenge. This paper offers a framework for understanding both the enabling conditions and criteria for the pursuitworthiness of ESs in experiment-intensive sciences. First, it analyzes how ESs are embedded within historically evolving material networks of experimentation, whose viability depends on the availability of standardized components, auxiliary procedures, generic instruments, and well-characterized specimens. Second, it examines the internal causal architecture of experimental systems by distinguishing between technical objects, reliable and stable elements used to manipulate phenomena, and epistemic objects, whose partially unknown properties motivate experimental inquiry. In this context, establishing the feasibility of a new ES typically requires proofs-of-concept using well-characterized specimens that act as generic carriers of epistemic objects. Third, the paper explores the role of theory in shaping experimental practice, determining relevance criteria, and enabling the extrapolation of knowledge from laboratory to broader theoretical domains. Finally, it argues that the pursuitworthiness of developing a new ES requires developing a framework in terms of experimental virtues. Three such virtues will be analyzed: the potential of an experimental system to open or expand data domains, to enable fine-grained causal interventions, and to reduce theoretical dependence in epistemic access to phenomena.
