Died (alas!) on this day in 1492, in Sansepolcro, the great Piero della Francesca. I could gaze forever at the fearsome geometry of his Annunciation.

Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

Today in 1940, an unnamed German airman takes a photograph as he flies over London. His image captures a Heinkel bomber in flight over the British capital. I've always found it a fascinating image, and often find details in it that I'd not noticed before. 🧵

Bönte: An Geschlechterstereotypen.

And here is another Guidonian hand, this time in a manuscript of mid 13 century (Cod. D 75 inf, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan). The hand, the very BIG HAND of this monk, may be enlarged but the monk is still smiling!
A Guidonian Hand, the hand of Guido of Arezzo, author of the first textbook on musical theory, in a manuscript. The hand is way too big for the image, and appears grotesquely enlarged in relation to the monk nearby.
