Then they came in with a season plan I guess to run every gap scheme in the book after getting lighter across the OL. Add a bunch of horizontal action for the RBs to it with reads, rely on drop back passing and a bunch of rhino shit from spread that isn’t forcing an overreaction to make it worth it

OSU playing a ton of Odd C1 this year and their front is not full of monsters like they were last year. That plus a bust in assignments w 2 guys chasing a back out fast and they’re down a gap vs unbalanced counter to the boundary. You really can just play C3.

Ope and then OSU busts playing C3 or maybe FZ. Needed a Smash call but both the corner and C/F player stayed low.

DCs like C1 on early downs bc it’s sound vs run and pass but every week I see teams bust when C1 defenders are put in run/pass conflict. If your front doesn’t protect them from making quick decisions or you don’t know who has what vs motions and formations, you’re gonna end up short a man vs gap.

These IZ RPOs from OSU are exactly what I wanted to see Beck install for our O. Gives you an easy way to line up and run stuff that plays to everybody’s strengths and then play off it.

That 3rd and long throw as Blackledge points out was never there. I’m not sure if that was a bracket or C2 weak but either way if you know WMU you know that’s the kind of coverage you’re going to see. Disappointing that Bryce would look that way given the circumstances. Telling in a bad way maybe.

College football possessions per game totals have been shrinking over the last decade due tempo preferences downshifting, plays per drive increasing with improved offensive efficiency, and game/play clock rule changes. FBS games averaged 23.9 possessions per game in 2025. bcftoys.com/possessions
Chart titled "Possessions Per Game Season Distributions", a bubble chart representing games played between FBS opponents plotted by the number of total game possessions. Columns of bubbles are organized by season, 2007 to 2025. Labels for the median number of possessions per game by season are included, which along with the distributions themselves, drift down from a median of 27 game possessions (in the 2007 and 2012-2015 seasons) to a median of 24 game possessions (in the 2023-2025 seasons).

Day has run that have roll corner-post (and variations) since he arrived at OSU. Very popular Shanahan influence

OSU put Tate and Smith to the same side. UM went C2 to that side, C4 opposite. C2 Safety shaded to Smith.

OSU really starting to go after the LB level, both in pass and in misdirection. They just do not execute early assignments well or recognize structures of route stems to help DBs behind them in coverage or actually position themselves to at least flash color to the QB

Zig zag motion into stack from the slot. LB didn’t have good leverage on the point man, can’t let him push vertical there and form that rub. But the motion makes it difficult as they are thinking quick route to the flat with the initial motion and not communicating

@colintj.bsky.social have to assume that was Zeus on INT? C2 on Smith, C4 to field. Field side was where Sayin needed to go with football.

Interesting wrinkle this year is OSU has tended to have a true outside monster and then a guy they lined up in the slot. This year it’s 2 true outside guys. So if we play C2 to Smith to the field, it’ll be Quarters away to Tate. Will Sayin be able to process that and get the ball to the 1v1?

@rossrfulton.bsky.social has said this elsewhere, but OSU’s become more and more of a Penny front (5-1 Nickel) team and that makes inside zone really tough to execute. Michigan has run more and more IZ to complement their OZ and moved away from their multiple gap stuff as the season has gone on.

Wink has blitzed on 3 of the first 23 plays. WAY less than usual. Also playing some Zeus on Boston. When Boston lines up at 1 to the field, they play C2 to the field, if he's 2 then Quarters. Play Quarters away from Boston. Simplifying a LOT but still a major wrinkle for this opponent.

Here’s a good example of our guys not being given answers in their calls. This is 3-4 vs 12 on 1st down after the 3rd and 1 that SC got into 12 for, tho I think they could’ve subbed. It’s a 4-deep 2-under fire zone.

Bad enough I gotta watch Barham on this play. Only to also have to watch whatever the hell Hillman is doing. Not to mention the PSLB completely lose situational awareness. Can’t run C1, not because of physical talent, but because we don’t know the scheme… This is me dying inside

UIUC went to a ton of C3 vs SC and it largely worked to keep Maiava from feeling comfortable reading it out. But OSU’s O is just built from the ground up to beat C3 in the air—they looove curl/flat. Sayin not struggling at all to see what’s there rn. Would help if they at least started in 2-high.

They can’t fit gap and they don’t know how to play Tampa and they played 3-4 vs 12, things we’ve been complaining about since OU.

OSU has a bit of an explosives problem. Partly play calling. Bert is gonna play a ton of 1-high that’s what he does. Sayin has shown he can rip that up and Day just doesn’t care. They’re gonna get their reps in running gap without numbers. It’s kinda sandbagging but also Sayin needs the reps? I dk.

OSU running a backside glance RPO v Minn’s Invert Tampa. Per @spacecoyote.bsky.social, believe that Sayin is reading grass to see the opening for the glance.

Charted the first half and I don’t think Wink really let up much or changed really. Blitzed ~2/3 of the time. Barham did some dumb stuff early, Wink had some especially exotic versions of his blitzes, UW threw some quick game, and Zeke biffed a tackle.

There’s some interesting punch-counter punch stuff happening in the CMU game I think. Like I said Venables brought a ton of corner pressures especially HOT. Example:

Palms (regular rules) to any 2-removed. There is no 3-Drop, so you don't account for the RB. 2 underneath players are wall builders & have to take underneath routes back. CB is playing Squat, which means they sink regardless of a flat presence. Ball brings you down.

Really cool design behind this Fire Zone. Drop the down weak safety to deep center where he can keep his eyes on any vertical coming from opposite

Thoughts on Michigan: Overall, very happy with the O scheme. Would like a little more heavy formations, a little less 4-wide, but overall I think it’s close to what I was looking for. Run game diversity from Moore, PAP, roll outs, take advantage of some free yards and get easy looks for QB

@spacecoyote.bsky.social good stuff here from Patricia. 3 deep, 3 under FZ with the ghost 9 bailing to deep middle and boundary DE using an eyes technique.

SOURCE: Ohio State OL coach Justin Frye is leaving to become the Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach. Frye spent three seasons with the Buckeyes. He did an excellent job managing OSU’s O-line this season after it lost its starting LT and center and went on to win the title.

Fun that everything that’s going to go wrong for ND’s D has roots in the first play of the game. Here’s the end zone view. As @rossrfulton.bsky.social noted, it’s Windback, which would show up over and over and over. Try to figure out what the issue is here!

For Chip Kelly being known as such a spread guy, ironic that much of what OSU did last night was built off of 12p under center duo/windback

Block down the reduced front, escort for the detached force, counter footwork plus OL seeming to flow with the back keeps the LBs from falling back and fitting the ball. Over and over and over
