The 2026 season is very young (only 100 FBS vs FBS games through Week 2), but the average number of possessions per game continues to trend downward.
Chart titled "Possessions Per FBS vs FBS Game"; a line chart illustrating the average number of possessions per game from 2007 to 2026; the average for all games played in a season is featured prominently, and the average for games played through Week 2 is provided as well; 2026 data through Week 2 is highlighted

As far as my ratings calculations are concerned, the biggest difference between 13-12 and 12-7 isn't going to show up in FEI, it's going to show up in strength of record.

Was that offensive drive a two-and-out or a three-and-out? Did they gain one yard or six yards? College football data work starts with collecting and combing game information from trusted sources that aren't always in alignment, and making choices and tradeoffs about what to keep or discard.

Virginia's 23-play drive against NC State is the longest (in terms of the number of plays) in an FBS game since September 27, 2025 when Hawaii had a 24-play drive against Air Force that ended in a field goal.

Preseason ratings are just a (decent) starting point.
Chart titled "Preseason vs End of Year FEI Ratings"; a scatterplot of all FBS teams from 2012 to 2025, preseason FEI ratings on the x-axis and end of year FEI ratings on the y-axis. 12.8% of dots on the chart are highlighted in red, representing teams that finished the year with an FEI rating at least one standard deviation better or worse than its preseason rating.

I've received this question a couple of times: FEI has a preseason blind spot for NDSU and Sacramento State. I don't use any priors for teams making the jump from FCS to FBS, they all get the same "newcomer" starting point. FEI Week 0 game projections (proceed with caution): bcftoys.com/2026-gp

Is it more weird that Cal and Clemson are part of the same conference, or that they only play two common conference opponents this year, or that Notre Dame has more common ACC opponents with each of them without being a conference member?
