Any big American city is going to have a smaller, sparser city inside it that runs entirely in Spanish. It's entirely possible to work, shop, eat out, and so on completely in Spanish if you know where to look. But for most of us that second city is completely invisible. Ruminating on this.

Tweeting about This Week In Demos again to say that October 6th had some interesting looking ones! At the rate of release it'd be impractical for me to skim all the Steam pages, let alone download, play, and stream all of these games so I only grabbed, like, 5. Insights from playing a bunch of Steam demos: -There are so many of them and they just keep coming. However, maybe 1 in 20 is finished to a playable state, so the competition isn't as fierce as it appears. -Unreal 5 is a fuck -Originality beats polish -Please stop cloning Papers, Please and Balatro

They’re also doing their own memory-management work underneath this. Instances are managed in 64 KB pages, with page reference counting plus cache and GC optimizations. The goal seems to be reducing the cost of managing huge numbers of objects while improving locality and avoiding some of the fragmentation problems they’ve had before.
This also makes CAPCOM’s REDox project much more interesting.

REDox is their open-source .NET serialization/data library, with JSON, CBOR, MessagePack-style structured data handling, lazy decoding, streaming, compact token storage, etc.
At first glance it just looks like a standalone .NET library.
In context, it looks much more like the kind of infrastructure they can write and test normally in C#, then feed into this RE:Runtime / RE:C++ pipeline and ship as native engine code.

Deflects: roguelike where you reflect enemy bullets but can't shoot your own. Very deep upgrade system, very polished core loop. Cups and Curses: you've inherited a café and have to run it. Your customers are extremely chatty for the genre. Inventing your own drinks is a core gameplay element.
