Cornell University has failed in its obligation to protect its students. The conditions at Cornell are not unique; more than 1 in 5 women will be assaulted during their time in college. Title IX offices should be protecting the most vulnerable; instead they are designed to protect the university, prioritizing donor retention over student safety.

From 2018 through 2024, Cornell University reported more than 1,200 incidents of sexual violence. From those incidents, only 7 people were expelled or dismissed. Lack of a response is a response - by refusing to hold perpetrators accountable, Cornell has implicitly endorsed rape on its campus and allowed perpetrators of gender based violence access to power without consequence.

NYC-DSA commends Jane Doe's bravery and strength in pursuing justice, and the editors of the Cornell Sun in their rejection of inaction and silence.
