Grito de Lares was being commemorated, the FBI surrounded the home of Puerto Rican independence leader and commander of the EPB-Machteros, Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, in the small town of Hormigueros, Puerto Rico and fired more than 100 bullets.
According to various reports and investigations, including that of the Civil Rights Commission,
Filiberto was alone in front of more than 200 FBI agents who did not provide medical attention to Ojeda while he bled to death.
Filiberto's murder was met with public outcry and widespread criticism of the FBI, even from those who didn't politically agree with him.
