Look, If you think you're fighting the good fight by lecturing people whose lives are threatened by the tech that they're misinformed and that AI isn't "always" bad, be my guest. But I'm not convinced that's uniting people against the very real existential threat the AI industry poses.

Yes, but sometimes one truth can obscure another. "AI can be useful" is a truth, but "AI is getting people laid off and datacenters are causing a ton of problems" is another. Which truth do you think matters more to most people? Which truth will divide people, and which will inspire them to action?

How workable solutions are will inevitably be dictated by the masses. "We need a nuanced approach to AI" simply isn't helpful optics when people are losing their livelihoods to this tech. Some leniency for gaps in information may be necessary in building mass solidarity against that threat.

Even if AI is useful (depending on the field) and criticisms of its technical capabilities are out-of-date (again, depending on the field), people aren't looking to give it a "fair shake" when it's automating jobs away and causing environmental devastation. Agitprop is more sellable than nuance.

I struggled with the gross aspects of having a body pre-transition, and still struggle with them after transition. I don't know if I'll ever fully cope with pissing and shitting and farting being part of the human experience. I wouldn't mind amputating all that if other solutions were possible.

I was a dues-paying member for about a year or so. The internal culture of the org was extremely paranoid about ideological deviation and the way it handled the sex pest and transphobia allegations at the time was pretty sus, to put it mildly. I really wouldn't be surprised if this was true.
