Als de herverkiezing van Trump en zijn handelen daarna ons één ding leert over het beschermen van de integriteit van verkiezingen is het dit: kandidaten die hun nederlaag niet kunnen accepteren als er geen enkel bewijs is voor fraude, kunnen beter levenslang worden uitgesloten van passief kiesrecht.

Social media is increasingly anti-social Only 7% of Instagram time & 17% of Facebook time is spent on content from friends or followed accounts. The rest is algorithmic video from strangers. This is what happens when you condition algorithms on looking time rather than real social engagement.

Met terugwerkende kracht mijn favoriete film van 2025: The Last Viking. Heerlijk absurdistisch, komisch, gewelddadig en ontroerend drama over twee bijzondere broers met geweldig acteerwerk en een knap scenario van de Deense regisseur Anders Thomas Jensen.

Kunstmuseum in The Hague is always worth a visit, but now even more due to two wonderful exhibitions: one with paintings from Francis Bacon and his contemporaries in Londen and one with photographs by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. For the first time, I also visited the cool Panorama Mesdag.

This year, I celebrate my 25th work anniversary at the University of Twente. We marked the occasion with food, drinks, and a pub quiz at a local brewery. I am grateful for the kind gifts from former and current colleagues, as well as the nice certificate and pin I received from the Executive Board.

The study shows that when policy issues such as immigration or climate change are presented in ways that more strongly evoke specific emotions (using threat or blame frames in video clips), larger differences between people can be observed in certain brain regions compared to more neutral framing.

I then teamed up in Twente with Giedo Jansen (now UvA) and Alan Sanfey (Donders Institute) to study whether we could use neuroimaging to better understand the interplay between policy issues, emotional responses, and political preferences.

For me, academic life does not get much better than this: some days in an ECPR workshop with 25 bright and kind scholars who share a research interest. I am grateful for all the insights I gained about referendums and the great people that I met, brought together by Alice el-Wakil and Daniel Kübler.

Thanks to 16 presenters from 12 universities we had a great panel on Democratic Innovation and Citizen Participation, which Krista Ettlinger and I co-chaired. All those people are an important reason why being part of this academic community is such a privilege.

What a great way to start the year at work: members of our university’s executive board, Tom Veldkamp and Machteld Roos, announced that I am one of the recipients of the UT Media Awards. The nice certificate comes with a huge cake, which my wonderful colleagues enthusiastically helped to consume.

Een van onze leukste familietradities is het Top 2000 Café bezoeken op oudjaarsdag. Vandaag waren we er voor de zevende keer bij. En de hele week staat de uitzending van de Top 2000 aan op tv. Uit mijn eigen stemlijst kwamen vandaag acht nummers langs, maar in andere uren. npo.nl/luister/stem...
