Decorative gourd season means gouache practice subjects that look wonky and bumpy all on their own.
Gouache painting of a pair of small, bumpy gourds on a turquoise background. One gourd is orange with a long, bent stem, and the other is mostly green and shrivelled.

Adorable jump scare this morning when I turned the porch light on for the dogs' morning bathroom break.
A very chubby raccoon caught in the sudden porch light after taking refuge from the rain. The same racoon hugging the post of the porch, trying to decide whether escape from the barking dogs it worth climbing up to the roof and getting wet.

I am not a crackpot, but I'm pretty sure the grocery store is purposely putting near-to-expiry milk in online delivery orders. The ones that are "still good" but anyone buying in person would skip. So I now have had to dump 2 bags down the sink and have nothing for coffee tomorrow.

May I remind everyone that there is currently NO cure for rabies. May I also remind everyone there is absolutely NO scientific proof connecting ANY vaccine that we produce today with autism. This is true regarding vaccination in both humans AND in dogs. Vaccinate your pets please.
Worries about vaccination rates in dogs
As rabies seems to be spreading more in wildlife, veterinarians are especially worried about vaccine hesitancy spreading among pet owners, a dangerous trend that could lead to more dogs - and their owners
- becoming infected. A 2023 study published in the journal Vaccine found in nationally representative
sample of Americans that nearly 40% believed canine vaccines were unsafe and 37% believed that vaccines could lead their dogs to develop cognitive issues, such as autism.

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

Urban sketching this week was at a local soft serve place. The sundae was delicious, even though soft serve isn't my preference, and I decided to draw the giant menu wall because I'm a masochist.
A sketchbook spread of the menu wall and order windows of an ice cream shop. To the left is a matching sketch of the New York cheesecake sundae eaten by the artist. The sketch is in ink, watercolour, and acrylic marker. A photo of the real life menu wall at the ice cream shop. A pair of customers are looking at the options. Notably, in the sketch, the artist avoided drawing people. The New York cheesecake sundae before it was devoured.

People seem to believe this but the math really doesn't check out. GPT-3 (so, several generations out from current models) was trained on ~570gb of compressed plaintext text. Assuming a (poor) compression ratio of 50%, that's ~2.28x10^11 words.

Sometimes you come around a corner and just know the dogs were up to something. Adorably.

More gouache practice. I like the final result, but I wimped out and switched to a smaller brush too soon, so it lost some looseness. I also couldn't really figure out how to do the semi-transparent tail feathers.

Not technically a spill, but my ex once set a big pot of leftover pea soup (lid on, but loose) on the floor while he made room in the bottom of the fridge. In a blink, the puppy had the lid off, tipped the pot while climbing in, and then tracked soup all over the house while we tried to catch him.
