Extremely proud and excited to have been part of the team behind today's @eso.org news item about WASP-127 b and its crazy winds (read here: www.eso.org/public/news/...) ... but even more BLOWN AWAY (!) by the incredible animation that I didn't know was going to be attached to it!!! 🤯🪐🔭🧪

Extreme supersonic winds measured on planet outside our Solar System
Astronomers have discovered extremely powerful winds pummeling the equator of WASP-127b, a giant exoplanet. Reaching speeds up to 33 000 km/h, the winds make up the fastest jetstream of its kind ever ...

🔭 Solar Analemma 2024 Image Credit & Copyright: Betul Turksoy apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25010...
Recorded during 2024, this year-spanning series of images reveals a pattern in the seasonal drift of the Sun's daily motion through planet Earth's sky. Known to some as an analemma, the figure-eight curve was captured in exposures taken only at 1pm local time on clear days from Kayseri, Turkiye. Of course the Sun's position on the 2024 solstice dates was at the top and bottom of the curve. They correspond to the astronomical beginning of summer and winter in the north. The points along the curve half-way between the solstices, but not the figure-eight curve crossing point, mark the 2024 equinoxes and the start of spring and fall. Regional peaks and dormant volcano Mount Erciyes lie along the southern horizon in the 2024 timelapse skyscape.

Happy Perihelion Day! If you want to celebrate the exact moment, it will be at 1:28PM GMT. That’s the moment we are closest to the Sun, and, since angular momentum is conserved, the moment we are whizzing fastest around the Sun. Sadly, it won’t make things noticeably warmer on this chilly day! 🔭

What generates the gravitational waves that make up the background? It is probably supermassive black-hole binaries and/or early Universe physics. We don't know yet but it is likely a combination of both! 💥 It's paper release day tomorrow! Excited to share with you all!
A graphic comparing gravitational wave background sources. The left shows a black hole binary and the right shows some bubbles. The text on the left reads "SUPERMASSIVE BLACK

The text on the right reads "PRIMORDIAL UNIVERSE

Allows us to study: The Big Bang, early

Astronomers have just discovered the first known "Einstein zigzag." Due to a lucky cosmic alignment, the combined gravity of two galaxies bent light like spaghetti & split a distant quasar into six different images. 🧪🔭 www.science.org/content/arti...
Visualization of the optical paths of the lensed images. The two zig-zag paths, D and F, are marked in pink and blue respectively. The deflectors cause two sets of sharp turns, while the smooth curvature seen in all paths is due to the expansion of space.

Jupiter Abyss - Pic - HD Pic - About Astronomy Picture Of the Day #astrophotos Maintained by @shinyakato.dev 🔭 READ MORE 🔭
What's that black spot on Jupiter? No one is sure. During one pass of NASA's Juno over Jupiter, the robotic spacecraft imaged an usually dark cloud feature informally dubbed the Abyss. Surrounding cloud patterns show the Abyss to be at the center of a vortex. Since dark features on Jupiter's atmosphere tend to run deeper than light features, the Abyss may really be the deep hole that it appears -- but without more evidence that remains conjecture. The Abyss is surrounded by a complex of meandering clouds and other swirling storm systems, some of which are topped by light colored, high-altitude clouds. The featured image was captured in 2019 while Juno passed only about 15,000 kilometers above Jupiter's cloud tops. The next close pass of Juno near Jupiter will be in about three weeks.
