So excited to see the cover for my novel based on the life of Irish artist Harry Clarke. It tells the story of his controversial Geneva Window as seen through the eyes of a young female assistant in Clarke’s studio. Set in 1920s Dublin, publishing January with @stairwellbooks.bsky.social
The cover features a highly detailed stained glass panel by Clarke. It features the character of Nelly from Liam O’Flaherty’s Mr Gilhooley. He picks her up from the street and she dances for him wearing only a thin veil. The figure of Nelly is depicted with a head of golden curls. Her pink veil, decorated with tiny star and heart shapes and a yellow zigzag border, seems to float around her. Clarke used a photo of a dancer from the Ballet Russes as inspiration. Cover text reads ‘The Window, A Novel, Catherine Crichton’

Some of Harry Clarke’s extraordinary stained glass at St Patrick’s Basilica, Lough Derg, Donegal.
An oval panel of stained glass, detail from a larger window, depicting Jesus being laid in the tomb. The people are wearing extraordinary colourful costumes, some with jewelled headgear, while Christ is painted in monochrome. Two saints (Bartholomew and Philip) are holding oval panels depicting stations of the cross. Two saints (John and James) are holding oval panels depicting stations of the cross.

Beautiful Narin beach and, just up the road, peaceful Portnoo harbour. ❤️ Donegal
A long double-curved strand of golden sand stretches into the distance, backed by sand dunes. Mountains can be seen in the background, beneath banks of cloud and patches of blue sky.A small harbour seen from the road above. A stone jetty protects the harbour which has a slope of sand backed by white cottages. Small boats are tied up by the harbour wall and colourful kayaks are lined up along the beach. The sea stretches to the horizon beyond.

This reviewer who “didn’t get” the Royle Family and switched off when Philomena Cunk was on Weekly Wipe wasn’t the best choice to review Ann Droid (in Irish Independent). She unsurprisingly gave this brilliant, hilarious, touching show a measly 3 stars. Give all the awards to Sue Johnston please.

“Then again, maybe I just don’t get it. When Philomena Cunk’s “interviews” would pop up on Weekly Wipe, I’d switch off. What was the point of it? It’s been done before, and better; look no further than Sacha Baron Cohen’s (‘90s incarnation of) Ali G or Caroline Aherne’s The Mrs Merton Show. Keeping with Aherne, I admittedly didn’t get The Royle Family either. I sat there wondering why on earth I’d watch a family watching other people on TV (and then Gogglebox was born…) In fact, the only reason I…”

Plans to restore this park were first published in 2014. This is beyond a joke, weapons-grade incompetence from Dublin City Council.
Mountjoy Square rejuvenation plans collapse after Dublin City Council error

Independent councillor Mannix Flynn said he would have initiated legal action had the process not been stopped

A blunder by Dublin City Council officials has led to the collapse of plans for the rejuvenation of Mountjoy Square proposed more than a decade ago.

The council’s executive has accepted it gave incorrect advice to councillors last month, which put them under pressure to vote on the plan for the Georgian park’s redevelopment, weeks ahead of the actual deadline for its ratification.

The council has now decided to scrap the planning process that had been in train since the start of the year. It will initiate new statutory planning procedures, which might not be completed until next year, potentially putting millions of euro in Government funding at risk.
