This is bad bad bad bad bad. Dangerous, even.
WMAR-2, an ABC affiliate owned by E.W. Scripps, had a round of layoffs and is reprogramming some shows to stream prerecorded stories in place of live, on-air reporting and live anchors. The new format, which debuted Wednesday night, kicked off with a weather segment and was followed by local, prerecorded news stories and national reports from a Scripps team.

The decision to forge a new course comes as executives of the station’s parent company embrace an AI-driven, 24-hour streaming model for news. Scripps is rolling out the change in a dozen smaller markets, including Baltimore, before it’s adopted at the company’s dozens of local stations. Other broadcasts are expected to switch over in the coming weeks and months.

everyone — consumers, publishers, writers — would wind up better off if web browser ad-blockers didn't exist and the rationalizations for using one are mostly clever justifications for what's just selfish behavior with obvious negative social consequences.

> Counterpoint - I like using the Internet to read articles and the ad blocker is the thing which makes that possible.

> Would the writers and publishers be better off if I didn't visit their website?

i mean if they are financially supported by advertising and you are a free-rider who views their content without seeing any advertisements, yes they are almost tautologically better off if you never visit their website

if you had “privacy features built in from the start”, would you not have built in the tamper detection/camera disabling features? also, if you had really been informed by safety experts and women’s safety orgs, you would not have produced pervert and abuse glasses. I hope Meta burns to the ground.
A Meta spokesperson said: “We designed our AI glasses with privacy and safety features built in from the start – informed by engagement with safety experts, including women’s safety organisations. Our glasses have always had an LED light that activates whenever someone captures a photo or video for their gallery.

“They also feature tamper detection technology, and we are updating the glasses to disable the camera if they detect the LED was physically tampered with or destroyed. No other kind of camera has done this and we’re proud to lead the industry forward.”

Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.
