You are a gem! Thank you for sharing this. I’m gonna have a lot of fun looking through this archive. Super cool.

Yes!! Thank you for this. There were three different versions I had in hand when I was buying and the other two were much larger but as you said, a variant. Either way, super cool construction

Right?! I honestly was blown away when it lit up. Absolutely the stupidest grin on my face when I realized what it was. A one-off prop is cool enough, but the fact that it was re-used is so much cooler. Thanks!

Thank you friend! ☺️ I feel really lucky…I don’t think anyone really knew what it was when it was posted in the auction, so fortune favors the ones with knowledge 😂. I got it for an incredibly good price for what it is.

Totally looks like it! 🤣 it’s definitely a custom build and the majority is 3D-printed and custom-wired. It’s super impressive. The amount of work the prop masters put into a prop that ultimately was only used for a few scenes of Star Trek is astounding. Huge appreciation for the craftsmanship.

My love of #StarTrekDiscovery is immense and this is officially the coolest thing I think I will ever own. I will cherish it forever. The fact that it was repurposed for an incredibly iconic episode of #StrangeNewWorlds takes the cake. 🖖🏻

Turns out, Tilly uses this prop as a “laser core sampler” to capture a piece of the asteroid so they can harvest the metreon-charged dark matter for the spore drive interface replacement in the excellent #StarTrekDiscovery episode, “New Eden”.
Tilly uses the laser core sampler to capture a piece of the asteroid in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”. The prop is lit up red, consistent with the previous images. Tilly pick up the laser core sampler by the handles in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”.

After getting this prop in hand, I noticed that there was internal wiring for a battery pack and a trigger on the handle. After hooking it up, I was super surprised to find that not only does it still light up, but the silver knob turns to allow for dimming of the red LEDs.
The “matter synthesizer” from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Those Old Scientists” is seen lit up with red LEDs inside the chamber with the clear acrylic window. A hand is seen squeezing the right handle of the prop. This discovery led to the screen match of the prop as a “laser core sampler” in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden” as used by Tilly to sample the asteroid. A different angle of the laser core sample from Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”. The opening where the “laser” can be seen shows bright red LED. A side profile of the “laser core sampler” prop lit with red LEDs as a hand squeezes the trigger on the right handle of the prop

I met up with the owner of the “radioactive” repurposed white yeti tumbler that was used in combination with the matter synthesizer for a photo op. With the “scifi prop” came the (surprisingly heavy) reaction vessel that Spock and Boimler are seen pouring the reaction mixture into.
A heavy dark stone vessel used as a reaction chamber in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Those Old Scientists”. The radioactive yeti tumbler is shown above, simulating the pouring of matter into the chamber. A screenshot of the tumbler pouring a liquid into the reaction vessel as seen in the episode, “Those Old Scientists”. Boimler and Spock are seen lifting a giant lid to put over the reaction vessel in “Those Old Scientists”. All three props (matter synthesizer, tumbler, and reaction vessel) can be seen.

I acquired this prop from the 403 Auction and it was labeled generically as “sci-fi prop.” It was prominently seen most recently in #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds, “Those Old Scientists”, as a “matter synthesizer” when Boimler and Spock are working in the lab to synthesize horonium.
A custom-built production-made prop from Star Trek Strange New Worlds and Star Trek Discovery. In this configuration, it is billed as a “matter synthesizer.” The prop is made of 3D printed black and grey parts forming a cylindrical vessel along with metal parts clear curved acrylic viewing window. Paired with the prop is a white yeti tumbler that has a “radioactive label” on it.The same prop mentioned in the first image from a side angle. The black handles have a repurposed PlayStation toggle joystick attached. A screen capture from the Strange New Worlds episode “Those Old Scientists” showing Boimler on the lab. The matter synthesizer prop is seen on screen in front of him on a lab table.

I feel this lol. I was in the midst of my first full TNG watch when we met but admittedly only watched when she wasn’t around, so I could see how she drew that conclusion. Then I did my first DS9 watch and the pandemic happened and that’s when the Trekkie really came out full time 😂

Even though my wife likes to claim I wasn’t forthcoming about my love of Star Trek on our first date, the proof is still there courtesy of this photo. 😂 Anyways, I feel like the luckiest guy. Very much looking forward to what the next ten years brings.

Ten years ago today, I woke up early and headed to brunch for my last first date. The date continued beyond brunch, included a museum trip, and ended with a sushi dinner. It was the best day. Ten years later, we have two dogs, twins, a house, and many wonderful memories. Life is great.

I honestly don’t really understand what their goal was with focusing on Spock because it didn’t feel like anything new was added to his character by the end. Maybe a rewatch will be kinder but it was hard to take the emotional beats seriously.

The puppet episode is tough for me. Technically impressive and I want to like it but the pirate story behind it is lacking originality and the dream aspect also kills it for me.

Nice! I really like “A Case of Chiaroscuro” for the TOS vibes, Una getting something important to do, and Uhura’s greenness contrasted with M’Benga being a seasoned veteran in these situations.

Yeah, not a hard ranking at all. Terrarium for a brief second almost topped Subspace Rhapsody for how good the story is but that musical is just in a league of its own. Nostalgia and vibes wins out there.

Now that I’ve finished the back half of the book, there’s a whole lot more of the messy, complicated, and devastating moments. It starts out cozy, but definitely veers more into really rough and challenging territory. Still a great read and relatable. Very well done.

While being charming and filled with comedic moments, it also strikes a balance of being totally devastating at times. The rich history the characters have makes this a page turner and I’m glad I picked it up.

I’ve been reading “Into the Blue” by Emma Brodie and I’m about 2/3 of the way through. Still early, but it may be one of my favorite reads this year. On paper, it’s a cozy love story with compelling characters, but it’s rooted in a Trek-adjacent fictional fandom and nails con life on the head.

Joe Morton was everything I was looking for in a guest star. The other day, I was saying William Windom was an S-tier guest star…Morton is right there with him. I think this is my second fav of the season (“Off-Hour” just hit so many boxes for me). Really close call though.

I knew as soon as the Joe Morton guest casting was revealed prior to the start of this season of #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds that the episode he appeared in would be something really special, rife with intense moments, and full of great character beats. “Orders of Magnitude” absolutely delivered.

Happy #StarTrek Day! 🖖🏻 my fandom began in 1998 watching reruns of The Original Series on the Sci-Fi Channel every afternoon after school. Star Trek has been there for me for a long time and I’ve met some of the absolute best people because of it. Cheers to many more years!
