Turns out, Tilly uses this prop as a “laser core sampler” to capture a piece of the asteroid so they can harvest the metreon-charged dark matter for the spore drive interface replacement in the excellent #StarTrekDiscovery episode, “New Eden”.
Tilly uses the laser core sampler to capture a piece of the asteroid in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”. The prop is lit up red, consistent with the previous images. Tilly pick up the laser core sampler by the handles in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”.

After getting this prop in hand, I noticed that there was internal wiring for a battery pack and a trigger on the handle. After hooking it up, I was super surprised to find that not only does it still light up, but the silver knob turns to allow for dimming of the red LEDs.
The “matter synthesizer” from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Those Old Scientists” is seen lit up with red LEDs inside the chamber with the clear acrylic window. A hand is seen squeezing the right handle of the prop. This discovery led to the screen match of the prop as a “laser core sampler” in Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden” as used by Tilly to sample the asteroid. A different angle of the laser core sample from Star Trek: Discovery “New Eden”. The opening where the “laser” can be seen shows bright red LED. I met up with the owner of the “radioactive” repurposed white yeti tumbler that was used in combination with the matter synthesizer for a photo op. With the “scifi prop” came the (surprisingly heavy) reaction vessel that Spock and Boimler are seen pouring the reaction mixture into.
A heavy dark stone vessel used as a reaction chamber in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Those Old Scientists”. The radioactive yeti tumbler is shown above, simulating the pouring of matter into the chamber. A screenshot of the tumbler pouring a liquid into the reaction vessel as seen in the episode, “Those Old Scientists”. Boimler and Spock are seen lifting a giant lid to put over the reaction vessel in “Those Old Scientists”. All three props (matter synthesizer, tumbler, and reaction vessel) can be seen.

I acquired this prop from the 403 Auction and it was labeled generically as “sci-fi prop.” It was prominently seen most recently in #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds, “Those Old Scientists”, as a “matter synthesizer” when Boimler and Spock are working in the lab to synthesize horonium.
A custom-built production-made prop from Star Trek Strange New Worlds and Star Trek Discovery. In this configuration, it is billed as a “matter synthesizer.” The prop is made of 3D printed black and grey parts forming a cylindrical vessel along with metal parts clear curved acrylic viewing window. Paired with the prop is a white yeti tumbler that has a “radioactive label” on it.The same prop mentioned in the first image from a side angle. The black handles have a repurposed PlayStation toggle joystick attached. A screen capture from the Strange New Worlds episode “Those Old Scientists” showing Boimler on the lab. The matter synthesizer prop is seen on screen in front of him on a lab table.

A fun little #StarTrek project I’ve been working on. I have acquired a ceiling light from Nahla Ake’s quarters from #StarfleetAcademy. The original LEDs were toast, so I replaced them with WS2805 LEDs. Love having a cool little Star Trek mood lamp on my desk, straight from the USS Athena herself!

Here are some close ups of the lab glassware so you can see the labels. #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy
A 500 mL beaker with metallic label that has graduated markings from 200 to 500 in 100 mL increments. The label says “D-92” and “use extreme caution.” It also says “Property of Starfleet Academy” at the bottom and some sort of logo that represents an atom. A 250 mL beaker with metallic label that has graduated markings from 100 to 250 in 50 mL increments. The label says “S-87” and “use extreme caution.” It also says “Property of Starfleet Academy” at the bottom and some sort of logo that represents an atom. A 500 mL side-arm filter flask with metallic label that has graduated markings from 200 to 500 in 100 mL increments. The label says “K-01” and “use extreme caution.” Unlike the others, it does not says “Property of Starfleet Academy” at the bottom, but does have the same sort of logo that represents an atom. A small cylinder sample container with metal lid that has a movable opening in the top. The lid is likely a repurposed spice/seasoning shaker. A neon green film is wrapped in a circle and placed inside to represent a “sample.”

As a chemistry teacher, I always wished that #StarTrek would show more chemistry/lab-related things. #StarfleetAcademy achieved that and I was thrilled. I am very lucky to have great friends in this community and as a result, have been able to add lab glassware from the #StarfleetAcademy production.
A portion of a shelf in Caleb’s Star Trek collection display case, which features a circular USS Discovery logo, a Saru bust, a framed set of Star Trek Discovery uniform swatches by division, and Starfleet Academy science lab glassware with metallic “Property of Starfleet Academy” labels with different label designations. The science lab glassware is the newest addition to the collection and includes a 250 mL beaker (label designation “S-87”, a 500 mL beaker (label designation “D-92”), and a large side-arm filter flask (label designation “K-01”). There is also a small cylindrical glass container with a metal lid with “green mystery sample” that is made of a transparent neon green film that’s been wrapped in a circle and placed in the container.

I finished my #StarTrekVoyager rewatch this morning. It feels bittersweet as it’s been a good comfort zone through a lot of life changes. I’m a bit embarrassed to say the rewatch started on October 3rd, 2022, which was 1062 days ago (a pace of one episode every six days). Definitely a slow burn.
A screen grab of a post Caleb made on Twitter/X, dated 10/3/22. I’ve missed #StarTrek outside of the weekly new episodes.” The original post includes the title card from the episode Caretaker and the scroll of text at the beginning of that episode that frames the Maquis conflict.

It’s the end of the year so time to watch #StarTrek “The Voyage Home” in class today. Here’s their assignment. How many can you get?
Questions featured on the worksheet for Star Trek The Voyage Home:
1. What was the Genesis device’s intended use for?

2. McCoy complains about the lack of a ship being sent. He says, “It’s bad enough to be
court-martialed and spend the rest of our life mining ________________.” What ore does McCoy state they would be mining?

3. When Spock is being quizzed by the computer, he is asked “What significant contribution to
bioengineering was made on the Loonkerian outpost on Klendth?” What is his response?

4. When being quizzed by the computer, Spock is asked to identify the electron configuration
of what element?

5. What environmental impacts does the space probe have on Earth? List as many impacts as
you can observe. Bullet points are ok.

6. Who does the crew determine the space probe’s signal is intended for?

7. Once the crew travel back in time, how do they determine which time period they arrived
in?Questions featured on the worksheet for Star Trek The Voyage Home:

8. When the dilithium crystals decrystallize, Spock proposes getting energy from a 20th
century power source. Describe the power source, how Spock plans to harness the energy,
and where they plan to find the power source.

9. What relative of the humpback whale was considered to be the largest creature to ever
inhabit the Earth?

10. At the time of release of this movie (1986), Dr. Gillian Taylor states there are approximately
10,000 humpback whales remaining, down from hundreds of thousands. How many are
there now? [You will need to research to answer this question]

11. Scotty is told by the engineer that the Plexiglass polymer needs to be 6 inches thick to hold 18,000 cubic feet of water. He then shows the engineer a different material that could do
the job and only needs to be 1 inch thick. What is the material called?

12. Although the material was considered fictional at the time that the movie was made, the
material referred to in the previous question actually exists now! Do a search on this
material and write three interesting facts about the material.

2025 has kinda sucked so far and is already expensive. Our new heat pump had a manufacturer defect so we’ve had to run aux heat for three weeks straight. Really not looking forward to that electric bill. Also this morning, this happened 😤

“First First Contact” is my favorite season finale of #StarTrekLowerDecks. It slaps. The score, the teamwork, the Archimedes/Sonia Gomez, Cetacean Ops, the setup for Rutherford’s S3 arc, and teasing a Freeman promotion only to pull the rug and go “To Be Continued…”. Just absolute perfection. 🖖🏻

I always look forward to my #GoodReads reflection at the end of the year. This year was a new personal best, and while the majority of it was listening time on my commute, I’m really proud of what I’ve branched out with and I’m learning a lot more about what I like about different genres.

I will hit the lofty “1701 day” learning streak on #Duolingo in mid August of this coming year.

I present to you: Exhibit A: Shuttlepod in a shuttlebay Followed by the twins contribution… Exhibit B: catastrophic force field failure in the shuttlebay. I am so proud of them for taking their roles as future Trekkies seriously. #MagnaTiles #StarTrek
A magna-tiles toy construction that is multi-colored on a rug. The tiles are arranged to represent a Shuttlepod sitting in a shuttlebay. There is a double window in the back of the shuttlebay representing the exit out the back of the ship. The Shuttlepod has an arch-shaped door piece representing the blast shield. The previously described Shuttlepod model is flattened and smashed to pieces, courtesy of the poster’s children. It is a disordered assortment of multi-colored pieces, including squares and equilateral triangles.

Here’s one for the block bin. This account seems to be replying to everything and anything with condescending and rude comments. Don’t engage. Just put their boredom-driven bait in the dumpster.
An account called @lawooo.bsky.social replied to Caleb’s post about a Trek book he read with a condescendingly rude reply, insinuating that Caleb doesn’t read challenging books. The account’s replies to several other users represent similar condescending, rude, and childish content. Block and beware.
