Album of the night: The Lion and the Cobra by Sinéad O’Connor. What a voice. I don’t think it’s possible to play “Troy” too loud. If you’ve never listened to this album, drop what you’re doing and go do it.

Sad news in the Payne household. We are going to have to euthanize Jayne soon. She has developed an issue in one of her legs. Heartbroken isn’t even the word for how we feel. Having her has been one of the absolute highlights and delights of my life.

Album of the night: Heligoland by Massive Attack. It’s pouring rain outside and that is the perfect atmosphere for this album. Great vibe. Would function well as a score for a moody movie.

Before (looking south along the trail) and after (looking north). I lucked out that there weren’t any big trees to remove but I do have some work left to do to raise the ground level a bit. Kinda mucky in a couple spots.

@downgoesbrown.bsky.social , @mirtle.bsky.social , @marklazerus.bsky.social , @jkamckenzie.bsky.social Gents - just renewed my subscription to The Athletic. Thanks for all you do. I’d pay the fee for DGB alone - the rest of you are bonus features. Kidding! But thanks. I appreciate your work.

Right next to the downed tree I mentioned earlier is this beauty. You can see the skeleton just below the greenery. This, my friends, is an apple tree. If there’s anything more delightful than picking a fresh apple on a quiet chilly Sunday morning, I’ve yet to find it. Chilled, crisp & tart.

The last tree across the main trail. Since it’s Sunday morning, I’m using hand tools. And, despite my long standing motto of “Safety Third”, I am wearing safety glasses.

Today’s office. First pass on reviving an old trail. Removing downed trees & branches so I can get my various blades in here for grooming. Can’t beat it for physical activity. Ten minute walk to get here warms me up, then bending, twisting, lifting & such.

Album of the night: The Score by Fugees. Very fun album. I missed the whole Fugees experience when it rolled over music back in the day. Great album. “Killing me softly” is a fantastic song.

Album of the night: Cleopatra by The Lumineers I’ve been outside building and grooming a trail in my woodlot all day, and this album exactly fits my mood this evening.

Always something interesting and new in the trails. This is equal parts beautiful and ewww. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one before. Love the latticework. #mushroom

Album of the night: “Dummy” by Portishead Can’t say I’d heard of them until @alancross.bsky.social mentioned them on his podcast today. Beautiful music. Man, do I ever feel like I missed out on this group. Will definitely relisten to this album.

Further to my last post: Something got ahold of it and learned a rude lesson today. The skunk’s demise was involuntary.

Wife goes outside to walk around the yard. Wife runs back to the house. Opens door: “There’s a dead skunk in the backyard.” Oh joy.

Album of the night: 1984 Soundtrack by Eurythmics Annie is my favorite female vocalist, so any of their albums is a treat. Very much the heights of mid 80s synthesizer driven music. The big hit was Sexcrimes. Julia is also a great song.

Checked out of my hotel. Asked front desk to call a cab for me. The guy grabs his phone, says “Yes” five times in about 20 seconds. Two minutes later there’s a cab outside.

Walked out of my hotel and found this going on. I’m not sure if it was summoning or banishing, but there were demons involved. Kidding! They were actually very good. Mephistopheles and Beelzebub agree! Kidding!!

Hi - I’m Rodney, an accountant/consultant living in PEI. There’s a video where Annie Lennox, David Bowie & the surviving members of Queen are performing “Under Pressure.” She really leans into it during the bridge and it always moves me. George Michael is in the wings singing along. It’s magic.

On the topic of Canadian culture, this is a slice of Newfoundland that many forget. The stories first appeared as a series of radio broadcasts from 1947-53 and appeared as a CBC TV series. @cdnhistoryehx.bsky.social have you done anything on these stories?

I was reading the USA list if demands. Buried in the section on Border Controls, I found: ——- Article 79 (c) The Littlest Hobo shall be required to carry a passport at all times and use only official border crossings. ——- That’s a no for me.

Dude, NO ONE wants to be an American…not Canadians, not Australians, not the French, not the British…NONE. And, can someone PLEASE explain to this idiot how tariffs work - for farmers to be “charged” tariffs, they would have to be created by the American government.

Official Communiqué on the Canada/US Tariff Dispute
FLIPPERS UP
GOVERNMENT OF HEARD ISLAND OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER • OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE
STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY WITH CANADA
The Government of Heard Island expresses its profound disappointment following the failure of recent U.S.-Canadian trade negotiations and the imposition of 50% tariffs upon Canadian goods.
Having ourselves been unexpectedly introduced to American tariff policy, Heard Island stands firmly with Canada.
Effective immediately, Canada is offered exclusive preferential rights to Heard Island's future sustainable fisheries, scientific facilities, cold-weather rescarch, and responsibly collected guano.
Canadian vessels are hereby granted Most Favoured Flock status, including priority access to Heard Island waters and exemption from all tariffs imposed by this Government - which, admittedly, is none.
Canadian universities and scientists are likewise invited to establish a permanent research mission. They will be welcomed warmly, insofar as anything here can reasonably be described as warm.
Canada and Heard Island share much: vast wilderness, unreasonable weather, an abundance of ice, and increasingly complicated relations with the nation immediately to Canada's south.
To our Canadian friends:
You are not alone.
Our waters are open.
Our ice is yours.
Our penguins stand with you.
And unlike certain larger trading partners, we do not renegotiate every 90 days.
PM Mccormicki
Prime Minister of Heard Island
Guardian of the Rookeries & First Flipper of the Republic
