Starting tomorrow on Indigenous Peoples’ Day federal contractors are scheduled to begin removing thousands of saguaros and other desert plants from Tohono O’odham land in Arizona for Trump’s border wall, according to tribal officials.

A little meadow lies open at the foot of Glacier’s mountains, its grasses bright beneath a sky gathering for rain. Beyond it, pale-leaved trees shine among the conifers, their delicate crowns seeming almost lit from within. Behind them the evergreen forest rises in close, dark ranks, and behind the forest rises the mountain—so immense that the tallest trees become a fine fringe along its base.

Across that broad face of stone, ledges run like ancient lines of writing. Gullies descend from the broken crest; one great outcrop stands forward from the slopes behind it, its every crease brought into view by the uncertain light. Above, heavy clouds drift over the summits, drawing their shadows across rock that has endured storms beyond counting.

How wondrously these unlike things dwell together! The meadow yields to every passing season; the leaves will soon fall; the forest holds its ground year upon year. And high over all of them, the mountain receives the weather, wearing its long history openly upon its face. One may look from the nearest blade of grass to the farthest ridge and find no place where the wilderness has ceased its work.
