if you’re worried about the book, don’t be. it’s a 14th edition of 19th-century content and while it has some fun illustrations, it has a lot of… problems…

making good progress converting this book into junk journal (volume 2 forthcoming!). I’m tearing out every third page and then glueing the two surrounding pages together in order to make room for the junk. it’s slow but I think it will be a fun aesthetic problem to solve with my journaling.
a book viewed from the bottom with gaps forming where some pages have been removed. there are out-of-focus torn pages and crafting tools in the background.

Went to Auckland Botanic Gardens last weekend and the weather was lovely for it (opposite of this weekend it seems) but also super sunny and not good for photos. It did spark some ideas for my own garden though! I like the African and rock gardens best.

Daphne has the cutest, teeniest flowers coming in 🥺 I’ve noticed recently my current phone doesn’t do very well with close ups, which is a bit disappointing at times. 🇳🇿🌱

There are a few patches of the garden which are so charmingly overgrown and perfect… why can’t it all look like this? 🇳🇿🌱
The compound leaves of a small Polemonium “purple rain” mingling with the tiny leaves of Acaena inermis purpurea, Acaena antarctica, flowering spreading thyme, and opportunistic wood sorrel, next to some grey stones with sunlight dappling across the image.

Quilt update: I’ve completed four more blocks in the past week, but “completed” isn’t really the right word as they are each in six pieces…. I could sew the halves together, but I wanted to get a feel for the project before tackling matching all those points! #quiltsky #wip
Five mostly-assembled “whirlwind” patchwork blocks in pinks and blues hanging on a grey gridded design wall. Pink bunting hangs above and two block printed felt turkeys are supervising from the righthand side.

Today, I am cooking the annual P fruity soup 💛 Fancy handmade knife by @reconfine.com
A purple passionfruit cut in half revealing its yellow, seedy interior on a tiny white plastic cutting board next to a rustic artisanal hand-forged knife with wooden handle and a coppery teaspoon. There is a stainless steel saucepan full of passionfruit pulp in the background with its glass lid. Everything is sitting on what looks like really nice end-grain countertop but is actually a veneer IKEA kitchen island.

I planted a significant quantity of rain lily (Zephyranthes candida) bulbs in July-ish(?) to try to fill this gap, but they haven’t done much until I noticed this cutie peeping out from under the wormwood. 🇳🇿🌱
Close-up of a white crocus-like rain lily with yellow stamen between a wooden raised bed and grey paver border next to some pebbles. A silvery wormwood frond is growing over the top. iPhone plant identification is confused by this leaf/flower combo and thinks this is a California poppy 😆

I’m not normally a repeating block kind of guy, but lately I’ve been wanting a project I can chip away at without much thinking (and to use up some scraps). These blocks interlock with their neighbors so some organization to keep the associated pieces together will be required… #quilting ✂️
In-progress “whirlwind” quilt block made up of 4 slightly flattened scrappy pink hexagon shapes containing white Xs on a solid chartreuse background. The block is laid out on a grey cutting mat and surrounded by freezer paper templates, a rotary cutter, scissors, and a seam ripper.

Did some foundation paper piecing for the first time in a long time and it took me a second to remember what to do…. then I realised the seams pressed to one side isn’t going to work for me, so I immediately unpicked it 🙃I’m using individual freezer paper templates instead! #quilting

Started wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) this year and it’s doing well, though the larger bumblebees seem a little confused what to do with this flower shape. Yummy pizza flavored leaves for us humans! 🇳🇿🌱

This blossom on ‘Ryan C’ seems to have realized this is a goth garden… is there a special name for an anomalous flower that looks different than the rest on the same plant?
