I love the dichotomy of life where: 1) I spent the past few hours providing feedback on an academic article that better supports family understanding of accelerative practices, then 2) I turn around to book my next appointment to get my knees tattooed.

Not that I have time for this currently, but I (figuratively) have a list of people I’d love to co-design games with. I’ve never co-designed, and there are so many people who make cool stuff out here.

I remember when the It tv miniseries came out. My mom and I watched it each night it was aired. I was 8 and didn’t want to shower for fear of Pennywise climbing out of the bath fixtures.

October will be such a busy and exciting month: • Hosting in-person convening for educators • 2 conference presentations, including 1 keynote • Facilitating 2 workshops/TTRPG game jams • BSG game day • 2 dear friends’ birthdays • immense work on this design I gotta get to the publisher 😬

Just heard #PaxUnplugged is going full Human Made. Proud of em, it's my favorite gaming con. And it's nice to know they'd prefer to present the works of real creative human beings. That's one less sign booths need to make, but if you'd like to anyways, here's a free icon hinokodo.itch.io/human-made

Did you know that you can cover solo games (card, board, RPGs) without (1) making an excuse why it’s okay to play a game solo and (2) playing it off as if it’s just a silly thing because you “have no friends.” Solo gaming has been, and will continue to be, legitimate. It’s 2026, y’all.

Listening to some old music today and thinking how gatekeepers are the worst types of “fans.” Outside of some hard science, most taxonomies are entirely made up and shift over time. Language and grammar do, same with music, arts, games, etc. Don’t be a gatekeeper. Be okay with change.

Don’t know what possessed me (pun intended), but I’ve been thinking of David’s delightful-looking Pax Playground, which makes me want to design a Pax game about kids telling spooky stories around a campfire. Thinking about tying tales together, lore, storytelling, and realism as traits to explore.

Celebrated life today by grabbing a bunch of magazines from Half Price so I could make more collages. Only ended up using one image of a bird and settled on doing a trio of images instead.

I wouldn’t call this nuanced, but I dare you to branch out from making RPGs based on fantastical/sci-fi settings and try your hand at real life themes. And don’t make it based on a system. Just make your own thing. You’ll stretch yourself. Promise.

As a perpetual creative living under capitalistic constructs, it finally happened. This morning I thought, “I wonder if I made a snail mail club that featured a couple collage prints, a letter, and a sticker. Would $10/month be ok? I wonder how many people would sign up.”

After a bit of curiosity, creativity, and crafting I ended up with this. All because a big fashion mag we didn’t request arrived after seeing @travisdhill.bsky.social share his #collage work here
Collage made from magazine pages. A tiger in the middle ground looks off to the right. A red curtain drapes down the left side. A giant-sized fountain pen descends from behind the curtain, touching up a spot on the tiger’s head. The background is a cacophony of white and pink flowers in a garden.

Spending this afternoon working on my presentation for the @meaningfulplay.bsky.social conference. Figured I should go with something rather austere for the topic. 🤷

Been watching Frieren recently. Thinking of an RPG that’s core concept/mechanic is time—not necessarily the passage of it or its fleeting nature—but rather how time influences the way we think and the decisions we make, how time can be a burden or a joy. Oh game design…

Telling y'all. (1) If I was better at layout and graphic design, and (2) if I would stop saying "yes" to academic adventures (probably the biggest thing stopping me from doing #1), I would be UNSTOPPABLE in making RPGs. I'm always so impressed with the work that @hinokodo.com creates.

Am I now exploring turning all of these collages into a deck of cards? Yes. Will it mostly be for my own entertainment? Also yes. Will I probably try to make a deck of 50 collages and use the last 4 cards as a space to create rules for a game? Yeah, probably. Will it "work"? Probably not.
